WHO IS IZAAK WALTON?

English author, Izaak Walton is best known for his work “The Compleat Angler,” first published in 1683. Walton was 30-something years older than Charles Cotton and was friends first with Cotton’s father. The younger Cotton regarded Walton as a father figure. Despite the age and other differences, “this seventeenth-century odd couple, Izaak Walton, the elderly linen-draper, who fishes with minnows and maggots, and Charles Cotton, the genteel fly-fisherman” became fast friends and Cotton contributed to Walton’s famous work. The clue makes it sound like Walton was dead when Cotton built the fishing cottage on the grounds of his estate beside the River Dove in 1674. However, Walton was very much alive. He died in 1683.
