Final Jeopardy: Countries of the World (3-19-19)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (3/19/2019) in the category “Countries of the World” was:

Because its overseas empire was dwindling, Spain declared war on this much closer country across the water on Oct. 22, 1859

3x champ Lindsey Shultz, a physician from Pittsburgh, PA, is up to $79,602 now and looking to go over $100K in Game 4. The challengers, Bren Inman, a store manager; and Megan McAllen, an attorney from Washington, D.C., are looking to send her home.

Bren found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “They Named the College for Me!” under the $600 clue, with 10 clues to go after it. At $1,000, he was in a second place tie with Megan. They both had $2,600 less than Lindsey’s lead. He bet $800 and thought it was Marquette. That was WRONG.

Round 2 Categories: Park-itecture – Vocabulary – Queens of Egypt – Celebrity Film Voices – Van Gogh – A Bit of the Old Ultraviolet

Bren found the first Daily Double in “Vocabulary” under the $1,200 clue on the 6th pick. He was in third place with $2,200 now, $7,000 less than Lindsey’s lead. He bet $1,400 and took a guess with iron. That was WRONG.

2 clues later, Lindsey found the last Daily Double in “Park-itecture” under the $1,600 clue. In the lead with $10,800, she had $7,200 more than Megan in second place. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS MOROCCO?

Spain’s war with Morocco from 1859 to 1860 is known by various names: The Hispano-Moroccan War, the Spanish–Moroccan War, the First Moroccan War (though the French call it the Second Moroccan War), the Tetuán War and in Spain, simply the African War. According to SpanishWars.net, expanding its empire was just one of Spain’s motives. Another was to put a stop to assaults on Ceuta and Melilla, Spanish sovereign territories that border Morocco and are still owned by Spain to this day.

From 2010: 19th CENTURY AFRICA ($1200) In 1859 Spain attacked this country over possession of Ceuta, a city on the Strait of Gibraltar

Bren got it right. He bet $3,100, bringing him up to $6,300.

Megan got it, too. She bet $1,500, finishing with $6,700.

Lindsey went north with the U.K. She lost her $5,000 bet but won the game with the $21,400 she had left. That took her over the $100K mark with a 4-day total of $101,002.

I’m kind of curious. Are the locations of the DDs determined BEFORE the first pick or are they created at “random” by a computer DURING the game? If they are already set before the game they could indicate the locations for the TV audience only, that way no manipulation would be possible.

    • Albert says:

I think they are set before the games. I remember when players started hunting for the DDs under the $1,600 clues and getting them. That is why we are seeing more DDs in the $800 clues on the second Jeopardy board. Just my observation.

      • JP says:

@Albert That is correct. Before the game starts, the writers/producers choose which clues will be the Daily Doubles.

        • John says:

I would like to know where they are. That way you can try to “will” the player you are rooting for towards them and it would be more exciting when you see that somebody is zeroing in on them.

  2. Albert says:

Lindsey looks like a 20 game champ, but I can see some small gaps in her knowledge which could prevent a long run.

  3. John Christian Ambion says:

She’s going to foot the bill! She’s going to be the 5-time champion we’re looking for! One more win, the streak is OVER! Anyway, she explained why the $2,000 DD wager got it right simply because of “logical reasoning” and although she missed the FJ!, the game was a runaway for her. Hmm.. could she overtake Kyle Jones? I don’t know, but we’ll find out.

  4. VJ says:

That was an impressive game for Lindsey, making it a runaway without much help from DDs. Congrats to her on going over the $100K mark.

I remembered where I first saw something about those Spanish cities in North Africa — it was on a youtube video about the strangest borders in the world. And when you look them up, the current stories in the news are all about immigrants trying to break through their borders. Here’s one from last month about Spain passing a law to tighten their citizenship laws because of that situation.

The link I put in for the Eugene O’Neill play actually goes to the movie based on the play. It is free to watch on Amazon Prime if you have it. Great movie with Paul Robeson!!

    • Cece says:

Hey, VJ—would you mind running by me what “The Book Title Title” category was about? 🙂

      • VJ says:

Sure, Cece – it was basically a fill in the blank for books that have a character’s (or thing’s) title in the book title, like “The Emperor Jones” is about Brutus Jones.

Here are the other 3 clues:

($200) “The Red ____: The Life and Legacy of Manfred Von Richthofen
        ($400) “The African ____” by C.S. Forester
($600) “The ____ Bride: S. Morgenstern’s Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure”

        • Cece says:

Hmm, weird. Thank you so much, VJ—also for going the extra mile and including the other 3 clues.

Re the Van Gogh triple stumper above, my bf likes to refer to that painting as ‘Les Moches”. 🙂

        • VJ says:

No problemo, Cece. lol, I like your bf’s title for that painting. Ask him what he thinks about “Ratchet Peasants”

(to anyone who may not know — “ratchet” is a slang term that has various meanings. I mean “wretched”)

        • Cece says:

He said “c’est trop gentil”, hahaha.

  5. Dal Higbee says:

I’m hoping Lindsey doesn’t lose tomorrow so we finally have a five-time champion. Hope she breaks the 4-day curse.

    • William Weyser says:

If Lindsey does break the curse, and wins her 5th game, there are 2 Do’s, and 1 Don’t That I Want Her To Do.
      1. DO Find The Daily Doubles, Before Your Opponents Do.
      2. DO Score A Runaway Heading Into Final Jeopardy!.
      3. DON’T Let Your Opponents Catch Up. Otherwise, They’re Gonna Play A Good Game, Find The Daily Doubles Before You, Have Huge Scores Going Into Final Jeopardy!, & You’re Just Gonna Run Into Tough Luck.

    • John Christian Ambion says:

@Dal Correction, Kyle Jones passed five games already, that was in the early stages of Season 35.

      • John says:

        @JAC
Kyle won 7 games. The last 5 game winner was Alan Dunn, winning game 5 on 10/18/2018, was defeated in the next game by Erik Agard who won 3 games.

  6. Lou says:

Well, since bren and and megan didn’t have much luck today since he missed both daily doubles (not knowing that Purdue is in indiana, my old home town before I moved to Connecticut) and the brownstone. Still Lindsey got lucky today despite her opponents unable to catch up to her. And I thought that they were going to send her home, but their performances in the main round didn’t quite impress me. I do feel that Lindsey might try to break the four game curse hopefully if she can get tomorrow’s final correct. I really hope we do get a five or a six time champ in Lindsey since she and Dave are both from Pennsylvania. Don’t you agree John and VJ? Also after the Spanish Moroccan war, did Spain and Morocco become you know allies and resolved their dispute?

    • John B./I. says:

That particular war lasted only 2 years. The U.K. put both in their place and Gibraltar – still being British- prevented the Spanish from getting too cocky…..”The Rock” became British in 1713 and is still British, though the Spanish make a claim from time to time. Gibraltar in Europe and Antigua in the Caribbean were 2 of the most important Royal Navy bases, especially valuable during the war against Napoleon. The French fleet was rendered useless. blockaded by the RN all around Europe, from Kronstadt(St. Petersburg, around the East and North Sea, Bay of Biscayne, the Med all the way to Egypt and the Levante, when N. wanted to invade Egypt and push to India and even China – Battle of the Nile was the decisive naval battle /1798, preceded by the battle of St. Vincent a year earlier and finally Trafalgar in 1805). The RN kept continental Europe alive, otherwise everybody might speak French in Europe…..😉

    • Richard Corliss says:

We’ll see about that spell being broken.

    • VJ says:

@Lou, wikipedia has a list of Spanish colonial wars in Morocco — it shows 5 more after this one. Apparently, the French call this one the second because they had a war with Morocco in 1844 that we call the Franco-Moroccan War that was quite short – about one month.

  7. John B./I. says:

Well, luck was a lady tonight, so congratulations to Lindsey for win #4. Fortunately for her, she could not be caught when she missed both European related FJs (Sax and the Spanish/Moroccan War). Bren and Megan were a non-factor today, just as Lauren yesterday, not even making it to FJ and Brian accumulating just over half of Lindsey’s total.
Unfortunately we will probably be looking at some delays and preemptions with the “Madness” starting tomorrow…… Thank goodness not here, the advantage of 6 hours behind EDT, especially since 3 of the #1 seeds are from the ACC.

    • RT81 says:

we should be fine tomorrow John since the basketball don’t start till Thursday..

      • John B./I. says:

there are 2 games played on the 19th and 2 on the 20th, but they are not on CBS and are qual. games to enter the main bracket, so I guess we ARE safe till Thu.
There should be an “extra” channel for this, so the games are not shoved down everybody’s throat, like them or not…..🏀
