Final Jeopardy: Ancient Symbols (12-11-17)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (12/11/2017) in the category “Ancient Symbols” was:
Taiji, the great ultimate, is the source of this pair that’s represented by the colors orange & azure respectively.
New champ Ben Raphel won $25,201 on Friday. In his second game, he is up against these two players: LaKedra Pam, from Baton Rouge, LA; and Charlie Santiuste, from Charlottesville, VA.
Round 1 Categories: Dogs in Hats – That’s Some Shameless Pandering – Where & When – Best Short Film Oscars – Recent Kids’ Books – Mercury, Venus or Mars
LaKedra found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Recent Kids’ Books” under the $800 clue, with just one clue left after it. She was in the lead with $6,400, $1,200 more than Ben in second place. She bet $2,400 and she was RIGHT.
This 2-word title of Chelsea Clinton’s book about determined women was coined by Sen. McConnell about Sen. Warren. show
LaKedra finished in the lead with $9,800. Ben was second with $3,200 and Charlie was last with $3,800.
Round 2 Categories: 20th Century Art – TV Watering Holes – Home Sweet Home – Acid – Peninsulas – “Great” Stuff
Charlie found the first Daily Double in “Home Sweet Home” under the $2,000 clue on the 10th pick. He was in second place with $7,000 at this point, $9,600 behind LaKedra’s lead. He bet $3,000 and guessed Helen Keller. That was WRONG.
Her last home was a 14-room boardinghouse in Arkansas known as Hatchet Hall. show
4 clues later, Ben landed on the last Daily Double in “Peninsulas” under the $1,200 clue. In second place with $6,800, he had $9,800 less than LaKedra’s lead. He bet $4,000 but transposed a couple of letters in his response so he was WRONG.
This large Siberian peninsula is home to more than 125 volcanoes as well as numerous geysers & hot springs. show
LaKedra finished in the lead with $23,000. Charlie went on an astounding 5-clue streak at the end of the round that broke LaKedra’s runaway. His score rose from $6,000 to $12,400! Ben was in third place with $2,800.
TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
ReligionFacts.com says “In Chinese and other Eastern thought, yin and yang are the two opposing and complementary forces that make up all phenomena of life. Both proceed from the Supreme Ultimate and together they represent the process of the universe and all that is in it.” Orange is listed as a color among yin’s symbols and azure, among yang’s. Tao-in-You.com says one shouldn’t get too hung up on the colors: “yin and yang refer to nature of things, and color is only one of the myriad manifestations of nature of things.”
Ben came up with Mars & Earth. He bet and lost it all.
Charlie got it right. His $8,808 bet brought him up to $21,208.
LaKedra got it right, too. She bet $1,801 and won the match with $24,801. LaKedra is the new Jeopardy! champ.
3 triple stumpers in the whole match!
WHERE & WHEN ($600) The building of the White Tower begins around 1078: this city
TV WATERING HOLES ($1000) As this “Next Generation” alien bartender, Whoopi Goldberg worked in the Ten-Forward lounge
ACID ($800) Not carbonic acid but this is the simplest of the phenol family of disinfectants
2 years ago: TWO of the players got this FJ in “Historic Places”
In 1761 he started running a ferry where the Potomac meets the Shenandoah. show

Hey. Just found this site and absolutely have to complain about that final jeopardy question.
Who has ever in their lives seen an orange and blue yin yang? Everywhere I look it’s clear that there is no particular color scheme associated with it.
Hi Brandon, look at that site, ReligionsFacts, that I linked to in the recap where the FJ answer is. They have orange and azure listed among its symbols. Also, I chose that particular book up there because the cover illustrates the orange and blue color scheme
Ben couldn’t get any rhythm going today. But VJ, you heard of yin and yang right? Theydo mean good and evil but what is the purpose of it? Like what does it do for the human body and their soul?
I don’t know that much about it, Lou. In fact, it’s something I get mixed up about. Check out the links in the recap for more info on it.
@Richard, Charlie didn’t run a category — 3 of the last 5 clues he got were in “TV Watering Holes” and the other 2 were in “Acid.”
It was quite an amazing leap in a great game, dominated by LaKedra. For a second there, I thought she wasn’t gonna get FJ but she pulled through.
LINK No more triple stumpers, but I did put up that Dogs with Hats category with the cute pics. Also, the other 4 clues in Kids’ Books. Trebek’s reaction to the little lion dog in the green hat was cute, too.
The Dogs with Hats category was so very cute. I was hoping to see a doxy, of course. Thanks for putting it up, VJ!
It was cute, Rhonda. My daughter-in-law has a shih tzu named Hannah. Never thought of her as a lion dog though. She doesn’t stand the way the little Peke we used to have did, with his chest out. Now that was a real little lion dog!
Hannah sounds so sweet, VJ. Your little Peke must have been adorable, too. One time at the vet’s, a lady had a Peke/Beagle mix, I have never seen a mix like that before or since. It looked just like a Peke, except its fur was the exact coloring of a beagle, such a unusual cutie.
Hannah is a sweet little dog, Rhonda. She looks more like a mop than a lion though. LOL!! I always said that if we got another dog, it would have to be one that wasn’t as hairy as a Peke or Shih Tzu. We have a Siamese cat named Rocky now (which would also be a good name for a little pug, right?)
Which category Charlie ran in the Double Jeopardy! Round?
