Ray Donovan Recap: Bob the Builder
A desperate Bridget got herself in some hot water in “Bob the Builder” (Ray Donovan S5 E10 10-15-2017). Daryll fell into a trap and the other Donovan brothers teamed up to get back Bunchy’s settlement money.
Ray sat on the sofa in his apartment close to crying, imagining Rob strangling Natalie James to death, while the police took photos of Natalie’s dead body. Detective Martinez asked him if he was ready to go downtown. He said he would drive himself but she insisted on taking him with her. In the meantime, Doug Landry and Sam Winslow were sitting in her office. He wanted her studio. Sam’s Guilt Box (by now, we have to give it a name) was on the desk. In response to Doug’s threat, Sam coolly told him to go ahead and release it: “We’ll see who comes out on top.” Doug raised her a Tom Minor. He knows who killed Minor and how much Sam paid that person. He wants the studio and the network now. Sam said she wants the news and he told her to keep it. He shook his head no when she wanted all of New York. Sam called Ray on his cell and wanted to know if he had been questioned by the police yet. She told him not to mention Doug Landry’s name when that happened. He hung up without a word and when Martinez questioned Ray, he told her that Doug was the father of the baby Natalie James was carrying. At that, Martinez left the room.
Ray got a call from Terry about Bunchy’s plight. Terry was at the gym where Potato Pie had done what he could to stop Bunchy from bleeding out but now they needed a doctor to get the bullet out. Ray gave him the address of the vet, Dr. Lopez, who took a bullet out of Rob in Episode 3. They met there and Bunchy was given an anesthetic, under the watchful eye of a duck that reminded him of a trip to Public Garden on his 7th birthday. Bunchy needed a blood transfusion and Terry knew that Ray had his same blood type. After the operation, Bunchy insisted on going back to get his money. Terry told him to forget it: “It’s only money.” But Bunchy explained how he had to bare his soul publicly about what Father Danny O’Connor did to him, and how that money is all he has to give his family a shot. Ray and Terry quibbled over who would go with Bunchy, but Bunchy said either they all go or he goes alone.
As they waited for Ray to rent a car, Bunchy asked Terry what happened to his nose and Terry reluctantly told him about how he helped Abby commit suicide. They went to Acid Man’s place in the rented car and started tossing the place when the money was no longer in plain sight. Holy cow! It looked like there was a meth lab set up in one spot and it looked like some body parts in a dresser drawer. Looking out the window, Ray saw a dead dog with its forelegs tied together hanging from an old swing set. He went outside, walked into some storage shed or whatever it was, and lifted up an obviously loose board. Eureka! There was the diaper bag with whatever was left of the $1.2 million in it. Ray started outside when Acid Man came flying in and hit him in the stomach really hard with a wrench. Then he held it Ray’s throat and head butted him so hard, Ray fell on the floor. We thought Ray was knocked out, but as Acid Man was about to deliver the coup de grâce, Ray knocked him on his rump and did a number on him. Now it was Ray’s turn to deliver the coup de grâce, but Acid Man pulled a gun. Just then Terry showed up and shot Acid Man in the chest. They drove Bunchy home where he reunited with his wife, Teresa and his daughter Maria.
Mickey’s already hard day gets harder
Mickey and Daryll were apparently oblivious to the fact that Bridget was ever in the house during their wild party. Mickey was suffering from the continued effects of the gas station Viagra (Triceratops 5) that Linda the hooker gave him. They joked over the names that the stuff is sold under like the Up Lifter, the Elephant Gun, Magical Johnson and Bob the Builder. Daryll looked up the problem on his phone and found out that it was a medical emergency. They went to Urgent Care. Mickey told Daryll about his threat to Jay White while they waited. Daryll got a call from Jay White right when Mickey was called in. Mickey hit on the doctor, who declined (“I’m a married woman”), while Daryll talked to Jay White who said they had to meet in his office right away to find a way to prevent Mickey from making threats.
As soon as Jay told him that they can make “Four Leaf,” Daryll should have been on his guard but instead he told Jay that they should definitely go with “Mister Lucky” because it’s the “bomb-dizzle for shizzle.” Jay said the only reason he would make “Four Leaf” is because he’s being blackmailed by Mickey and got Daryll to say “yeah” in response to his “right?” He laid out how Sensei Shoota’s death was an accident, how it was Mickey’s idea to slice up the sensei and how Daryll snatched his phone out of his hand when he wanted to call his lawyer. Daryll said he was sorry and gave his word that those tapes would never see the light of day. “You bet your ass they won’t,” Jay replied triumphantly, knowing that the whole conversation was on tape now. In walked, District Attorney Jackson Holt and told Daryll he needed to answer some questions about Mickey.
As Jackson Holt was leaving the film studio, Mickey was at the gate trying to get in and noticed his old nemesis. Daryll called Mickey and when he heard where Mickey was, Daryll told him to bail. Later at home, Daryll told Mickey that Jackson Holt wanted him to wear a wire. Mickey was not concerned to hear that Holt has it in for him because he knows Holt hates him, but he was worried that Daryll was lying so he pretended to hug him, really looking for a wire. Daryll was very offended.
Bridget’s got a gun
Bridget had a plan to get Smitty some help but it wasn’t exactly well-thought out. She went to a hotel where Dr. Bergstein was conducting a presentation as part of a Surgical Neuro-Oncology Summit. She saw Dr. Bergstein showing her audience Emily’s before and after photos and saying that Emily was expected to have a full recovery. Bridget hung out and interrupted Dr. Bergstein’s luncheon, demanding that she do something to help Smitty. Dr. Bergstein tried to make an appointment with Bridget to discuss the matter but Bridget kept insisting that Smitty was dying and there had to be something the doctor could do, punctuated by plentiful F bombs. Later Bridget somehow managed to gain access to the doctor’s home. Bergstein came into her bedroom to find a gun pointed at her. Bridget pleaded with her to help Smitty because she could not lose another person and he is all she has. Bergstein stayed as calm as possible and talked Bridget into giving her the gun. As soon as she had it, she called the police and Bridget was hauled off to the pokey.
SUPPORTING CAST OF “BOB THE BUILDER”
In the end, Ray went to the gym and turned on the shopping channel (um, why in the world?). He lay there on the sofa listening to it when Sam Winslow sashayed in. Ray demanded to know how she found him there. She ignored that and told him he deliberately told the police that Doug was Natalie’s baby daddy to spite her. Ray snorted and said he wasn’t lying for Doug. Sam explained that she asked him to lie for her sake, not Doug’s. She had a deal all set with Doug to give him half her company and now he wants it all. Sam wants Ray to kill Doug. Ray said no in his usual 2-word manner (Eff you). Sam wasn’t taking no for an answer. She said: “I gave you a job, Ray, and I expect you to do it,” and walked out. We don’t anticipate Ray killing Doug just because Sam expects him to, so we’ll just have to wait for the “or what?” part.
