Supporting Cast of Shelley Duvall: Ray Donovan

Here are some of the actors who appeared in “Shelley Duvall” (9-17-2017) in “Ray Donovan,” Episode 6 of Season 5. The episode recap is here.

Michelle Kim in Ray Donovan

Wow! This is awkward

Michelle Kim played Emily Chu, a woman who had the surgery that Smitty was on the waiting list for until he got sick. According to Bridget, Ray had something to do with Smitty’s sudden illness. If Smitty was knocked off the list, Abby could have the surgery. It now appears that Abby asked Bridget and Terry to help her die because she did not want to have the surgery. Emily did make a remarkable recovery– Smitty said he hardly recognized her– but she did not know until this chance meeting that Smitty did not get the surgery.

We’re gonna find out if you’re hungry enough

Tom Wright returned as Punch Hoffman, Hector’s manager. We first met him in the “Marisol,” the second episode of Season 4. Punch is going to help train Damon for the match on Hector’s undercard.

Here is a video of Shelley Duvall, as Olive Oyl, singing “He Needs Me” about Popeye in the 1980 film. The symbolic significance of playing that song at the end of this episode escapes us, but in the movie, Olive Oyl was initially engaged to marry Bluto. Her song “He’s Large” is our favorite. We like the scenes with George Winslow. We like how he just randomly pops up with his movie trivia when he sees Ray and Ray is like “what?” Then again, Ray says “what?” a lot– almost every time someone tells him something.

Other Notes:

  • We can’t wait to see the next episode now that Bunchy is in jail with Dime Bag, one of the guys who stole the million dollar diaper bag. Dime Bag has got to be the dumbass of the century. He should have been long gone with his share of the loot.
  • It was hard to see what was going on in the dark during the shootout with the DEA, but we think at least one DEA agent died. It must have been Agent #2. Look at the cast list below. He wasn’t listed.
  • Tom, the blackmailer, was another casualty of this episode. It was made to look like a suicide but after seeing that Oscar statuette back in Sam Winslow’s office, Ray was sure it was murder most foul. Ray was looking at Sam like she was the boogie man. After seeing Ray deal with the Armenians and the Russian mob, we don’t get what the big deal is. But the ending shot of Sam Winslow looking like the cat that ate the canary was pretty good.

And Natalie thinks she always wins
