Penguins Beat Lightning on Sidney Crosby’s Overtime Goal

Sidney Crosby had gone through eight straight playoff games since scoring a goal, but he ended that with a goal when it counted the most. Crosby scored a goal 40 seconds into overtime in Game 2 of the NHL Eastern Conference Finals to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning On May 16th, evening the series at a game apiece.

It was Crosby’s fourth goal of the post season, but the first since Game 4 of the 1st round series with the New York Rangers. He did not score a goal in the quarterfinals against the Washington Capitals. Evgeni Malkin, another of Pittsburgh’s big guns, has gone seven games without a goal and six without an assist. But this Penguins team has depth and others are stepping up and filling the gap. Phil Kessel, picked up in a big trade with Toronto in the off season, has six goals as does Patric Hornqvist.

The Penguins defense did a good job shutting down Tampa Bay. The Lightning had only 21 shots on goal, while the Penguins had 44. Tampa Bay goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy, filling in for the injured Ben Bishop had a fine game with 41 saves but was tagged with the loss.
