Final Jeopardy: Business News 2015 (3-15-16)

The Final Jeopardy question (3/15/2016) in the category “Business News 2015” was:

In July it replaced Toyota as the world’s largest automaker; in September its stock price fell by one-third.

New champ Philip Tiu won $12,198 yesterday. In his second game, his opponents are: Sean Cauley, from Louisville, KY; and Kristen Bancroft, from New York, NY.

Round 1 Categories: Women Only – Geology – TV Time – Poetry – The Navy Ashore – “R” & “R”

Philip found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “The Navy Ashore” under the $800 clue. There were 9 clues left after it. He was in third place with $2000, $2,200 less than Sean’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Philip finished in the lead with $5,200. Sean was second with $4,800 and Kristen was last with $3,200.

Round 2 Categories: Jill & Jack – Country & Town – Drink & Food – After & Before – Roll & Rock – Everything’s Backwards

Philip found the first Daily Double in “Everything’s Backwards” under the $2,000 clue around mid-round. In second place with $6,800, he had $2,000 less than Sean’s lead. He bet $6,000 and he was RIGHT. FYI, he’s a math professor.

Philip found the last Daily Double in “Country & Town” under the $1,200 clue. There were 6 clues left after it. He was in the lead with $19,600 now, $6,000 more than Sean in second place. He bet $19,000 (WHAT IS GOING ON??!??!??) He didn’t seem to know but the guess he took right before he ran out of time was RIGHT. That proved to be the last clue we saw in the round.

Philip finished with a runaway $38,600. Sean was next with $13,600 and Kristen was in third place with $4,000.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS VOLKSWAGEN (VW)?

“2015 was supposed to be a big year for Volkswagen, and one that they started as the global sales leader…. The German automaker sat atop the throne for nine months, only to give it away amidst the chaos that is the dieselgate scandal. Taking over is Japanese automaker Toyota, and they are no stranger to the position of top dog. Toyota beat out General Motors, who didn’t relinquish the top spot for 70 years, back in 2008. It was Toyota originally who Volkswagen was directly competing with for the global auto sales lead, and just as quickly as they took that spot from them, they let it slip away equally as fast.” (NY Daily News)

Kristen wrote down Honda, crossed it out and wrote down Toyota, forgetting it was in the clue. She bet and lost it all.

Sean got it right. He bet $5,599, bringing him up to $19,199.

Philip also got it right. He bet $11,300 bet so he won the game with a whopping $49,900. His 2-day total is $71,098.

It literally gave me a laugh and a surprise from that $19,000 Daily Double wager. It scared me!

  2. Cece says:

    Philip, thou art crazy!

I nearly had a heart attack before he answered. The longest 12-13 secs, ever.

    • jacob ska says:

@Cece, I still can’t figure out why he did it.

      • Cece says:

Well, my only guess is that he’s a risk taker and felt pretty comfortable with the category ‘Country & Town’. After all, getting Dakar & Kazakhstan (?) ain’t no small feat. :):)

I like the guy, so I was happy and relieved when he got the DD and FJ right as well.

    • EricS says:

I really would like to know why they don’t seem to have a time limit on that. I think his answer would’ve been the same.

    • rhonda says:

I am with you, Cece. The audience gasped when he made his wager. I didn’t think he would come up with the right answer, he was taking so long.

  3. William Weyser says:

I think Philip Tiu set the record for the highest amount to bet on a Daily Double: $19,000. Sorry, Roger Craig and Leonard Cooper, but you 2 just got bumped off, although Roger Craig’s $77,000 record is still unbroken.

    • Lou says:

Don’t forget Michael Bilow, he also had set a record for highest total back in march 2015. Same with Arthur Chu. Both of them had bet huge amounts in final jeopardy and won huge.

      • William Weyser says:

Right Lou! Now about Philip’s $49,900 win, that amount’s in 3rd place for big paydays this season. I thought that $46,599, which was what Tim Kutz won in his 1st game, but then, I did some research and I found out that way earlier in this season, in his 11th game, Matt Jackson scored $50,000, and then in his next game, he scored $51,000 and that’s the biggest payday of Season 32, but all of those wins are still below Michael Bilow, like you said, who scored $57,198 almost a year ago, and that was the biggest payday of last season and Arthur Chu scored $58,200, the biggest payday of Season 30, in his 8th game, over 2 years ago.

        • Lou says:

Agreed, those guys are fierce competitors and I will give them that. Besides we are well aware that Both Tim Kutz and Fred Vaughn are already earning a spot in the 2016 ToC along with Sam Deutsche. I also do believe Phillip will do the same though if he wins the 4th game. that’s why I like these big bets from these players since Alex Jacob also bet big on double jeopardy during his toc run in 2015

  4. aaaa says:

$19K is one of the highest DD wagers ever, maybe the highest. Bob Beers wagered $10K on a DD in 1988 under the old dollar values. Only 50 clues played total in the first two rounds is one of the lowest numbers for a regular game I can recall in recent times outside of celeb weeks.

  5. rhonda says:

I nearly fainted when Philip wagered everything on that DD.

    • EricS says:

Yes, a 13,000 bet would have sealed the win or still left him a chance to win if needed.
      But that was way YOLO!

  6. jacob ska says:

Big coincidence that fj clue would deal with Volkswagen. Today 300 institutional investors filed a lawsuit against Volkswagen for the huge decline in its stock price.

If these lawsuits proceed Volkswagen may have to spin off Lamborghini, Porsche, Bugatti, and Bentley to defend itself against such huge litigation.

  7. Cyril Morong says:

Thanks for recapping this game. Is there a time limit on giving the correct question on daily doubles? Is it 15 seconds. I played the recording and I came up with 12-13 seconds until he started to answer.

    • VJ says:

idk, Cyril. These are my impressions comparing today to my recording for the March 10th match (after remembering that Katrina blanked out on the first DD in Double Jeopardy!). The buzzer went off like 12 seconds after Trebek finished reading Katrina’s clue. He was giving the answer on the 13th second. Today, Philip began his answer on the 11th second and the buzzer never went off at all.

Both times, Alex gave a prompt at 9 seconds. Katrina started saying “What is” on the 7th second and on the 9th, Alex said “Say something”. On the 9th second today, Alex said “Philip?”

  8. Leena says:

OMG! That last Daily Double was literally record-breaking. As I scrolled down, I kept screaming omg. I’m more excited about tuning in to The Final Wager!
