Final Jeopardy: Sports Rules (6-1-15)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (6/1/2015), in the category “Sports Rules” was:
The Syracuse owner created this in 1954 and it may have helped his team succeed the Lakers as champs the next year.
4x champ Dan Feitel returns to try for a 5th win after racking up $99,999 last week. His challengers today are: Victoria Machado, from Burlingame, CA; and Randy Pike, originally from Louisville, KY.
Round 1: Victoria found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “The Law of the Land” under the $1,000 clue before the first break. She was in third place with $1,000, $1,400 less than Dan’s lead. She made it a true Daily Double but could not come up with an answer so she was WRONG.

Dan finished in the lead with $6,400. Randy was second with $3,600 and Victoria was last with $3,000.
Round 2: Victoria found the first Daily Double in “Historic Mottoes & Slogans” under the $1,200 clue. Still in third place, she had $3,800, $2,600 less than Dan’s lead. She bet $1,000 and she was RIGHT.
Huey Long adapted this slogan from a speech by William Jennings Bryan that goes on to say “but no one wears a crown”. show
Randy found the last Daily Double in “Canadian Cities” under the $1,200 clue with just 3 clues to go. He was in third place with $5,600, $8,400 less than Dan’s lead. He bet $5,400 and thought it was Edmonton. That was WRONG.
The swan is a symbol of this Ontario city; each year, white & black swans are released into the Avon River. show
Dan finished in the lead with $14,000. Victoria was next with $7,600 and Randy was out of the game, after digging himself into the hole with wrong answers to 2 of the last 3 clues to the tune of negative $2,600.
Only ONE of the two players left got Final Jeopardy! right.
“The 24-second shot clock is used to time possessions by the offensive team. If a team does not attempt a field goal within 24 seconds of gaining possession of the ball, a violation is committed and possession is awarded to the other team. The clock is also reset anytime the following occurs: illegal defense violation, personal foul, fighting foul, kicked ball, punched ball, ball hits the rim of the team which is in possession. Danny Biasone, the late owner of the Syracuse Nationals, invented the shot clock following the 1953-54 season to try to speed up the game and prevent teams from stalling. ” (History of the Shot Clock)
Victoria didn’t have an answer but she didn’t bet anything either, so she remained at $7,600.
Dan got it right, including the 24-seconds. Alex recalled saying last week that when it’s not a runaway, Dan bets everything but $1.00. That’s not exactly what he said (see last Friday’s game) but it was exactly what happened today. Dan bet $13,999 and won the game with $27,999. His 5-day total is $127,998.
During the chat, Dan talked about his hobby of blind wine tasting. His father is an expert at it and is teaching Dan to be able to identify the grapes a wine was made from, when it was made and where just by the taste.

Congrats, Dan, you did it again!
But seriously, Dude, I worry about Keith’s heart…
I’m wondering why Trebek tells Dan’s wagering strategy to his opponents at the beginning of the game. Reminds me of the time he told Brad Rutter how Ken Jennings had wagered the day before in the Battle of the Decades semi-finals. Weird!
Did anyone else notice how Dan and Victoria stayed pat during Randy’s crash and burn in the “Canada” category? His wild guesses baffled me that close to the end of the game. Perhaps, it was just my perception. Idk!!
As to Randy, after he lost almost everything in that Stratford DD, I guess he figured it wasn’t going to make much difference and he might as well take a shot.
As to Trebek’s intel on Dan’s wagering, just rude, imo, though he seems to think it’s very funny.
Your point is especially well made on a Monday game, where the players are less likely to have seen Dan play (any other time, they would have seen (at least some of) the other games. However, if one of the contestants had been held over from the previous day’s taping, A.T. might have thought the info fair under the idea of full disclosure.
Lol. As for Brad, he was going to do what he was going to do.
Trebek first made the observation on Friday. It was mentioned in the recap: “Alex Trebek kicked things off by informing the challengers that if it’s a close match, Dan will bet everything but a dollar in Final Jeopardy! Really, Alex?”
He just repeated it a little differently today.
Dan did not have a runaway on Friday and was closer to 2nd place then today’s pre-FJ finish but he didn’t bet everything but a $1.00 in that match.
That would really have been just for show then as all of the challengers would have watched those matches.
I think it’s important, though, to remember that Jeopardy! is a show, not a quiz bee, and A.T. has iconic status.
Though Trebek usually just goes with a you’re up against a tough champ, so be warned type of thing.
Now he’s observing betting patterns. What’s next? Weak categories? LOL!!
In most cases, players are able to sit in a separate section of the audience and watch game play before its their turn to tape. They’d have seen Dan’s wagering strategy first-hand.
Contestants are sequestered during tournaments.
Final jeopardy question was poorly worded and confusing. It implies it was something the owner did unilaterally. It was a rule change that he proposed but it was the league that changed the rule.
*Eyerolls*
I will let the experts comment on the dumb FJ wagers by both players left standing.
Yes, Dan would have won – even if he were wrong – with the 1.201 bet, so he risked the game and Victoria HAD to bet at least 5.200. That would have left her with 12.800
if right and Dan with 12.799….
Didn’t matter in the end, but Dan is a big ? in terms of FJ wagering, as William Weyser already posted. If the pattern holds, he should wager 1 buck tomorrow (provided he is in the lead without a runaway….)
But stupid wager or not, congratulations to Dan. He dodged a real bullet here, I would say even a machine gun burst. But: A win is a win. Maybe he WAS that confident, but the FJ category was as wide an area as it gets.
Could have been any sport and any segment within that particular sport. And risking the game like this…
Maybe his thinking was : if Victoria gets it right and I am wrong, I lose anyway. If I am right I might as well cash in big. Who knows? So far,so good . Almost 128 K. Not to shabby!
I thought you did it beautifully yourself Erica. Nice minimalism.
Thanks, appreciated.

I just can’t figure this guy out! Dan Feitel seems to be having a wagering pattern for Final Jeopardy! On Day 1, he wagers everything but $1, on Day 2, he wagers properly, on Day 3, he wagers everything but $1 again, on Day 4, he wagers properly again, and on Day 5, which is today, he wagers everything but $1 dollar again. Is the pattern gonna continue on Day 6 for Dan Feitel? Guess we’ll have to watch tomorrow’s game and find out!
If you ever saw the hometown howdies, then we won’t know if he’s gonna be in final. See, people! I replied (look at the bottom most me comment)! Please return in favor, ANYBODY!
that doesn’t necessarily mean what you think it means, Leena. Dan started out in his first game last Tuesday and they probably just reused his frame from last week.
They did the same think with Choyon last week — had him with a Thursday frame for the second time and he didn’t make it to the second Thursday.
Good thing my brain is not processing any of this — I hate spoilers! 🙂
BTW, I’m sure most of you have seen Keith’s funny tweet about Dan “having a vendetta against him for some reason.” 🙂
Dan was risking the game. Had he bet the “conventional” 1.201, he would have won even if he had been wrong. He likes to live (bet) dangerously, treading on thin ice…..
Well, one got it and it was Dan. Idk if he KNEW it or took a guess, have not seen the show yet.
Pretty often lately that only 2 players are left for FJ….
Wow, Dan! Congratulations big time! You go now!!
Congrats on your 1 correct solve prediction D.
Thank you!
The last DD was more or less a “gimme”.
Unfortunately Randy did not recognize the GIVEAWAY CLUE inside the clue. Nobody really knows small rivers in Ontario, so the river AVON should have triggered automatically STRATFORD.At least that would have been my guess. You have so many cities, rivers etc in the U.S. and Canada that were named after their originals in Britain.
Good work, DAN! Man, it feels good to be in FAME again. Just thought about my son. He’s a huge joker. I hope he’s like a Julia Collins in terms of money, ’cause I’m liking him as a champ. I forgot to mention this a long time ago, don’t forget to reply, and you better reply!
