Final Jeopardy: Colleges & Universities (5-29-15)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (5/29/2015), in the category “Colleges & Universities” was:

Mens and Manus, “Mind and Hand”, is the motto of this university whose alumni include I.M. Pei, Amar Bose and Richard Feynman.

3x champ Dan Feitel hit it big in yesterday’s game and brought his total winnings up to $85,598. In the last game of the week, his opponents are: Andrew Lasken, from Studio City, CA; and Autumn Swinford, originally from Fredericktown, MO.

Alex Trebek kicked things off by informing the challengers that if it’s a close match, Dan will bet everything but a dollar in Final Jeopardy! Really, Alex?

Round 1: Dan found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “History” under the $600 clue before the first break. It was the 4th pick of the round and he was in the lead with $600, $400 more than Andrew in second place. He bet the $1,000 allowance and thought it was Sarajevo. That was WRONG.

In 1950 and then again in 1951, this capital city fell to invading forces who were evicted each time by U.N. troops. show

Dan finished in the lead with $5,600. Andrew was second with $2,800 and Autumn was last with $1,800.

Round 2: Dan found the first Daily Double in “Mr. Smith” under the $800 clue. He was in the lead with $8,800, $4,600 more than Autumn in second place. He bet $4,000 and guessed “Oh! Susannah”. That was WRONG.

John Stafford Smith composed “To Anacreon in Heaven”, later used as the tune for this song. show

Andrew found the last Daily Double in “Native American Tribes” under the $1,600 clue with just 2 clues left to go. In second place with $8,800, he only had $400 less than Dan’s lead. He bet a modest $400 and he was RIGHT.

Historically, the Mojave were known as the Pipa Aha Macav, “People by the river” — this river. show

Andrew then gave an incorrect response to the $2k clue in “Grains” but Dan got it right, and they didn’t get to the last clue. So Dan finished in the lead with $11,200. Andrew was next with $7,200 and Autumn was in third place with $5,400.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS MIT?

“This motto reflects the educational ideals of MIT’s founders who were promoting, above all, education for practical application. “Mens et Manus” appears on the Institute’s official seal, along with a scholar and a laborer who signify a union of knowledge and the mechanical arts, as do the volumes “Science and Arts” that rest on the pedestal in the center of the seal. ” (MensetManus.Net)

Autumn thought it was NYU. (“Perstare et Praestare”) Her $5,400 bet wiped her out.

Andrew thought it was Cal Tech. (“The truth shall make you free”) That cost him $4,001 and he finished with $3,199.

Dan had Stanford (“The wind of freedom blows”) but crossed it out and wrote down the correct response. Maybe it wasn’t close enough or maybe just to “screw”* with Alex, he only bet $3,201 so he won this match with $14,401. His 4-day total is $99,999.

FJ Results: 5-29-15

Just a little joke — in the first round, the $800 clue in Tool Talk was “to swindle someone, perhaps out of the same-named wedgelike tool” and there was a bit of laughter when Dan answered “screw.” They were looking for “chisel.” When Alex read Dan’s 5-day total, he said “You could have risked $1.00 more.” Dan replied “You should have told me.”

Wow, so Dan makes it to 4 days and counting…congrats Dan!

His answer “screw” reminded me of Jennings’s answer years ago to a garden tool “…immoral pleasure seeker” “What’s a hoe”, he said.

Did Dan wager 13.800 or 13.799 i his first game? Did not see that show and there is a discrepancy of $1.00 ?

    • Marilyn Ahrenhoerster says:

In his first game he wagered 13799 for a first-day total of 27599.

A horrendous bet on the last DD. So, either tie or be behind with one clue left? At least bet to take a 2001 lead! I understand wanting to stay at one-half plus 1001 of the leader as a downside, but that is the proper range to play to win!
Numerically, the acceptable range was 2401-3199.

    • doris s says:

Absolutely! He would have paid the price for that blunder.Or rather not get paid had he and Dan be right. But since he was wrong in FJ and Dan right it did not matter in the end. But it’s a matter of principle and optimal wagering, especially at that late stage with 2 clues left.

The first time Dan wagered “as should” in FJ.
I am a little bit disappointed, “Mind and Hand” should have already a strong indication, never mind the alumni. I was hoping we would end the week on a high note but already the scores before FL were low again.
So congratulations to Dan again, another ToC member, and to jacob for the right prediction.
Have a great weekend everybody, see you Monday!

Don’t forget Eric. He predicted 1 correct solve before I did.

      • doris s says:

Yup. I guess this time I gave the players to much credit. So congrats all around!

        • Eric S says:

In a way, you may have given them too much credit. As we found out last year, if some of the better (at least initially more desirable ) players cancel, the coordinator will call up someone local. They may not be as good of a player.

        @ jacob
Re the German for “with”: just saw the show, funny that Alex first said “mit” before saying M I T…..he must have read my post:):)

@Eric, congrats on your 1 solve prediction.

Wow! Go Dan go!! 4x champ. 😀

    • Eric S says:

Lol. Thank you, but you were wise enough to say the same. I just got there earlier .
