Final Jeopardy: Literature (5-5-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (5/5/2015), in the category “Literature” was:

Interestingly, at the start of this novel, Prince Oblonsky, the title character’s brother, has been unfaithful.

New champ Scott Ylinen won $22,505 in yesterday’s game, defeating a 7x champ. Today he takes on these two players: Dan Green, from Orland, CA; and Jen Stoy, from Hyattsville, MD.

Round 1: Jen found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “World Capitals” under the $800 clue on the 4th pick of the round. With $600, she was in a tie with Scott and Dan had yet to ring in. She bet $500 and thought it was Marrakesh. That was WRONG.

Scott finished in the lead with $6,000. Jen was second with $5,300 and Dan was last with $3,600.

Round 2: Dan found the first Daily Double in “British Parliament” under the $800 clue, the third pick of the round. He was in third place with $4,000 now, $2,400 less than Scott’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and thought it was Oxford. That was WRONG.

Scott found the last Daily Double in “Multiple Roles, Same Film” under the $1,200 clue. In the lead with $10,800, he had $7,300 more than Jen in second place. He bet $2,500 and he was RIGHT.

Scott finished in the lead with $19,700, another runaway. Dan was next with $8,400 and Jen was in third place with $6,500.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “ANNA KARENINA”?

“To a certain extent, the novel is dated, or at least bound to the time and place of its setting, Russia in the middle of the nineteenth century. It was a time when divorce was not allowed except for reasons of adultery, which for the guilty party would then preclude the possibility of remarriage, and result in the loss of custody of one’s children. And everyone would be scandalized…. There is, of course, a double standard, which Tolstoy underscores by beginning his novel with an adulterous affair between Anna’s brother Stiva and the family’s governess….” ” (Books that Changed My Life: Anna Karenina)

Jen got it right. Her $6,400 bet brought her up to $12,900.

Dan thought it was “The Princess Bride,” although he didn’t quite get it all in. He lost his $4,700 bet and wound up with $3,700.

Scott also got it right. He bet $1,450 so today’s winning total was $21,150 and his 2-day total is $43,655.

At the beginning of the show, Trebek illustrated Scott’s level of self-confidence by relating how part of yesterday’s post-game chat. Trebek told Greg Seroka he was looking forward to seeing him again in the next TOC and Scott said: “”I look forward to seeing you then, also.” (At least, he didn’t saying “beating”!!)

VJ, saw the game this morning. My wise better half DVR it. I’m not too swift…didn’t think about that. LOL

    Hate local politics.

    • VJ says:

At least they run the game for you later on up there. They don’t do that down here when they preempt it — they still show a rerun at 1 a,m. 🙁

Thanks vj. I have not seen Jeopardy yet. It was preempted here for a political debate so I turned the tv off and read a book to avoid getting upset. Called some friends of mine and they recorded it for me. I’ll see it over the weekend when they visit or vice versa.

It will be shown here at 2 a.m. lol

I will be asleep. Are they kidding? Evidently, some other posters were preempted due to the few comments here this evening.

Glad Scott won again. Congrats Scott!

      P. S. Now that I have read an entire book I’m sleepy. Reading always works. 🙂 🙂

Pitiful misses on the first 2 DDs. The answer WAS IN THE CLUE….
Dan obviously never read A.K. or/and is not familiar with at least a synopsis and the main characters.
Rather mediocre performance except maybe by Scott. But then his competition wasn’t too strong.
    FJ was a “gimme”….

@Jacob, congrats on your FJ prediction: 2 right.

It will be wild if Scott reigns all week!
