The Final Jeopardy question (5/4/2015), in the category “Conservation Organizations” was:

Harriet Hemenway’s boycott of the feathered hats of her social circle inspired the 1905 founding of this.

7x champ Greg Seroka returns today after a fantastic week where we saw him rack up $180,401 in winnings. Today he faces two new players: Praggya Rustagi Barretto, from Boston, MA; and Scott Ylinen, from Morgantown, WV.

Round 1: Scott found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “The Midwest” under the $1,000 clue before the first break. He was in a tie for the lead with Greg. They both had $3,400, $2,800 more than Praggya. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE NATIONAL AUDUBON SOCIETY?

“Boston socialites Harriet Lawrence Hemenway and her cousin Minna B. Hall founded the Massachusetts Audubon Society, the longest-lived organization dedicated to bird conservation and public education…. Within six years of the Massachusetts Audubon Society’s founding, 26 other states had formed their own Audubon societies…. The National Audubon Society– until 1940, the National Association of Audubon Societies for the Protection of Wild Birds and Animals– was incorporated in 1905.” (American History, Smithsonian: Audubon Movement)

Praggya thought it was the American Birdwatchers Club. She lost $1,000 and finished with $3,800.

Greg wrote down “PETA”. That cost him $4,793 and he finished with $7.

Scott wrote down the “Audobon Society”, which was acceptable. His $4,300 bet brought his winning total up to $22,505 and he is the new Jeopardy! champ.

FJ Results: 5-4-15

During the chat, Alex could not resist talking about Scott’s “spectacular” handlebar mustache. Scott related how it got him out of a speeding ticket on his way home from a party. The officer told Scott the reason he was doing it was “I love your mustache.”

Am I the only one who noticed that when the Baltimore Oriole picture appeared in the regular game as a clue that when the fj clue was revealed that the contestants would make the connection and come up with the Audubon Society?

I guess it didn’t matter since there was only 1 solve. Rather surprising! I guess when nerves kick in connections are not made between clues.

…as in the idiom “birds of a feather flock together.”

Could it be that some people only think of Audubon as an artist and don’t associate him with conservation?

I know some people never even heard of him (at least the one who thought I said autobahn when I mentioned him never did)

What a coincidence! I’m watching Antiques Road Show and a lady brought in 2 small prints depicting deers by Audubon. Appraisal: $36,000.

  2. VJ says:

LOL Jacob. I figured Alex wasn’t going to miss his chance to talk about his own mustache. I didn’t think of Dali, though. I was thinking Oil Can Harry. 😉

Sad to see Greg go down on that FSF clue. But it’s not goodbye — it’s just so long until the TOC.

It will rock if Scott makes it to the TOC, too. He’s a good player

    • Cece says:

Maybe Alex will sport the same mustache next season.

I was hoping Greg would go small on that DD — I just had a bad feeling and sure enough… But like you said, we’ll see him again in the TOC. And he lost very graciously — smiled and clapped for Scott. Let’s hope Scott stays on for a few games; he’s a good player.

      • VJ says:

I agree, Scott could be our third lightning buzzer-inner, or however you say that, ha ha.

Yeah, wow, Greg looked downright happy to me — like he couldn’t wait to go home.

Oh, great! Once again. Greg Seroka just lost. Yesterday, I saw a video that would be his last game. I didn’t even hear Scott. I was eating dinner instead. I wanted Greg to be a 10 or 11-time champion. Oh, well!

Scott’s moustache made me think about Salvador Dali. 🙂 🙂

    Congrats Scott. Good game.

VJ, you said this fj clue was for the birds. Apparently, it was. LOL
