Jean Valliere, burned in 1523, is considered the first martyr of this religious group.
New champ Gina Shaddox won $11,000 yesterday, by hanging on to more money than anyone else in a showdown where no one got FJ right. In the final match of the week, she takes on these two players: Alex Navissi, from Katy, TX; and Lesley Cooksey, from Springfield, MO.
Round 1: Lesley found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “State the Senator” under the $400 clue. She was in second place with $1,400, $4,400 less than Gina in the lead. She bet $1,200 and thought it was Michigan. That was WRONG.

Gina finished in the lead with $6,400. Lesley was second with $2,400 and Alex was last with $1,600.
Round 2: Gina found the first Daily Double in “Ends with a Vowel” under the $1,200 clue. She was in the lead with $9,600, $4,000 more than Lesley in second place. She bet $1,000, and thought it was a plaza. That was WRONG.

Gina found the last Daily Double in “Historical Time Units” under the $1,200 clue. In the lead with $6,600, she had $1,800 more than Lesley and Alex, who were tied in second place with $4,800 each. She bet $1,000 and he was RIGHT.

Gina finished in the lead with $7,600. Alex was next with $6,800 and Lesley was in third place with $4,800.
Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
French Protestants became known as Huguenots in the 16th century, actually much later than the date that Augustinian monk, Jean Vallière, was burned at the stake for heresy. So the name leads one to France but the date precedes common usage of the term Huguenots. Apparently, he is “considered” the first Huguenot martyr by some just by virtue of being French. Brittanica.com is one source that names him as the first Huguenot martyr.
Two Augustinian monks named Johann Esch and Heinrich Voes are given the distinction of being the first Lutheran martyrs. They were both burned at the stake in Belgium on July 1, 1523, a month before Vallière suffered the same fate in France on August 8. The National Huguenot Society does not include Jean Vallière on its list of important dates in Huguenot history.
Lesley wrote down Jacobites. She lost her $4,799 bet and finished with $1.00.
Alex got it right. His misspelling didn’t hurt him and his $6,700 bet brought him up to $13,500.
Gina drew a blank. That cost her $2,400 and she ended up with $5,200. That means Alex Navissi is the new Jeopardy! champ who will be returning on Monday.

It seems to me the Jeopardy show is completely in error, for even your Brittanica.com reference does not tie Jean Vallière to the Huguenots, only French Protestants. A recent book The Huguenots by Geoffrey Treasure (2013, pg 67): “In 1523 the Augustinian monk Jean Vallière was burned in Paris for *having read and commented on Luther’s works.*” And I see the Wikipedia article seems to follow this line. So a better answer would have actually been “Lutherans” instead of “Huguenots”.
I don’t disagree that it was not a good clue or that classifying Vallière as a Huguenot is a leap, and I was trying to show that in the info segment.
As I pointed out, some people label ALL French Protestants Huguenots. The Brittanica article starts right out defining Huguenots that way: “any of the Protestants in France in the 16th and 17th centuries…” So in that sense, Jeopardy isn’t completely wrong but that doesn’t make it a good clue. So much for Jeopardy’s head writer’s claim that they research the clues carefully.
I gave the info on two monks considered to be the first two Lutheran martyrs who were put to death a month before Vallière. Thus, Lutheran could not be the answer without rephrasing — maybe like this: Jean Valliere, burned in 1523, is considered the first French martyr of this religious group.
well, vj as the only one getting it right. protestants, lutherans, augustines, all wrong, and vj is right, the country should have been the major clue.
luther was german and protestantism started in germany, then dividing into the a.b. (Augsburger Bekenntnis) and h.b. (Helvetisches Bekenntnis > “confession”, but not in the usual sense like you confess in church when you are catholic but more as in “conviction”) i had the name of calvin on my mind but drew the wrong conclusion. i connected him with the swiss/helvetic confession instead the huguenots.
well, vj, did you ever think of applying to the fbi or so?? you were the only one to recognize that the protestants were too big a group and france was – in retrospect for the others- the most decisive factor. my respects and i guess all the others of us can collect ashes on our heads….:):)

well, as it turns out, the show was preempted in Houston today. I got some help over the phone but I still had a few things missing. This is what I’ve got now and I will fix anything wrong or missing when I get to see the match.

I answered “protestants” on the FJ — even though I knew they wanted “Huguenots”, I drew a blank on the word. As per your info segment, I wondered if protestants would’ve been accepted by the judges.

Yeah, you’re right! Lutheranism is a branch of P.Christianity. Not that I remember who was martyred when (I try to not let religious stuff occupy space in my brain). :):)
