Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE STONE OF SCONE or STONE OF DESTINY?

“The Stone of Destiny was linked to St Columba, who was said to have used it as a travelling altar. For centuries Scottish kings sat upon the Stone to be crowned…. During a resurgence of Scottish nationalism in 1950, four Scots students travelled to London, entered the Abbey in the small hours of Christmas Day and nabbed the Stone from beneath the coronation throne. They dropped it by accident and it broke in two. They loaded the Stone into their car boot and brought it back to Scotland – despite road blocks and police searches.” (History of Scotland)

The “sacrilege at Westminister” was made into a film, “Stone of Destiny” (2008), starring Charlie Cox, Kate Mara, Gavin McCole, Ciaron Kelly and Robert Carlyle. It was directed by actor Charles Martin Smith (Ray Bob in 1978’s “Buddy Holly Story”).

The Stone is also sometimes called the Coronation Stone and Jacob’s Pillow or Pillar, believed to be the pillow that Jacob laid his head on to sleep in the Book of Genesis, Chapter 28.

Beverly thought it was the Hope Diamond. She bet and lost it all.

Jeff came up with ‘the royal jewels”. He only lost $501 and finished with $11,199.

Christi got it right (Stone of Scone). She bet $12,000 so she won her second match with $24,200. Her 2-day total is $36,199.

John, I’m not sure that Jesse is coming back to answer questions, so I’ll tell you what I observed from the tapings. First, the whole game goes about as fast as it can. When Alex leads to a commercial, there is no break in the game. The same thing is true for FJ: the show the clue, there is maybe ten seconds, they make the wagers (I saw no calculating implements of any kind), then the Aleve thing, then boom what you see is what is there.
The whole experience is pretty intense. If you’re in LA, and the timing is right, I highly suggest it.

thanks. that would explain some strange bets where somebody who gets on j just forgets to carry the 1, e.g……

      • eric s says:

You’re welcome. I’ve tried before to make the point that the game is very fast. It would be easy to get caught up in a fast pace. That’s one reason that I don’t think students do well: not enough of the old life seasoning. If you look at Jesse’s game, he could’ve had about 7500 by not using his buzzer. So, you’re right about the quick buzzers on one hand, but on another, the game must fly by. That’s why I am such an advocate on having the game theory down cold before you go in.
Hope that you enjoy your fourth and don’t drink too many fireworks.

This week’s tally: men: 1/4, women 4/11 (assuming no ties tomorrow). What does it mean?

    • john blahuta says:

5 winners in 4 days and 15 contestants in 4 days already??? your tally says 5 winners total and 15 contestants total. do you know who will win tomorrow? i’m a little confused. in 4 days (including today, thurday) there should be only 4 winners and 12 contestants so far. somehow there seems to be a knot in my brain?

      • eric s says:

There are two women left over from hometown howdies. Ergo, three women will play in tomorrow’s match. So, relax and untie your brain (ha, ha).

    • eric s says:

Ok. Before Marilyn reads this, yes, I was wrong. Since there were four guys, and one won and returned, the males were one for five, hence the women were four for ten (if no ties tomorrow).

Marilyn, please don’t take offense to this reference. I appreciate you keeping me sharp (or less dull).

Crossword puzzle aficionados know where Orono is quite well 🙂

Tomorrow there will be Sally Sheinberg, Kay Thanaporn, and Christi (returning champion) Esterle.
Correct me if I am wrong, vj.

So, Christi was introduced as a librarian/stay at home mom today. Yesterday she was introduced as a stay at home mom only. This is why I stated that if I ever appeared on Jeopardy I would say that I am a gardener. If you lose then no one will expect better. But since Christi won yesterday she probably figured it was safe to throw in the librarian title today. Smart thinking my dear. Congratulations on your second win. Good strategy.

    • Marilyn Ahrenhoerster says:

On yesterday’s show Christi was introduced at the top of the show as a librarian and stay-at-home mom. My husband commented that she must have a library in her home. When Alex interviewed her, he said she was a stay-at-home mom. She was not hiding her profession.

Chance Gardener. Being There. So Classic.

instead of discussing fj wagering again, something more important:

    HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY !!!

i know it’s tomorrow, but by the time i get online tomorrow it’s alread evening on the east coast. no reason to not start celebrating early, since it’s a 3 day weekend to boot!

and from a certain point on don’t get confused! don’t hurl the beer cans while you swallow the fire crackers. if you start doing that, it’s time for bed 🙂

    • jacobska says:

The same to you, John. As I grill pineapples with other good things I will be thinking about Hawaii. That’s where the really good pineapples grow.

      HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY ALL!
