WHAT IS A MEME?

The word “meme” was coined by Richard Dawkins, a noted British evolutionary biologist, in his 1976 bestselling book “The Selfish Gene”. From the book: “We need a name for the new replicator, a noun that conveys the idea of a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation. ‘Mimeme’ comes from a suitable Greek root, but I want a monosyllable that sounds a bit like ‘gene’. I hope my classicist friends will forgive me if I abbreviate mimeme to meme. If it is any consolation, it could alternatively be thought of as being related to ‘memory’, or to the French word même. It should be pronounced to rhyme with ‘cream’.” Wouldn’t it have been simpler to name the darn thing “meem”?

So Dawkins was thinking of the French word même, which generally means “same”, although there are other meanings. When it means “same”, it has a circumflex over the first e. The French word for Dawkins’ meme has an accent grave over the first e.

Armand’s response was “um.” He lost $5,000 and finished with $1,800.

Emma came up with “thought.” That cost her $4,000 and left her with $7,000.

Joe got it right. He bet $10,300 and won the game with $22,100. Joe Feldmann remains champ with a 2-day total is $45,000.

The first round was robust. Double Jeopardy! lost a little steam. Still, pretty good game.

    I just blanked on final.
