Patton: 1970 Best Picture

“Patton” won the Best Picture Oscar at the 43rd Academy Awards over “Airport”, “Five Easy Pieces”, “Love Story” and “MASH”.

George C. Scott had already informed the Academy that he rejected the Best Actor nomination and would not accept the Oscar if he won. And that’s why presenter Goldie Hawn has this reaction when announcing the winner:

“Patton” producer, Frank McCarthy accepted the award onstage. IMDB says McCarthy returned it to the Academy the next day pursuant to Scott’s wishes.

Other notable films of 1970 were: “Woodstock”, “Little Big Man”, “Ryan’s Daughter”, ‘Tora! Tora! Tora!”, “Chariots of the Gods”, “Catch-22”, “Diary of a Mad Housewife”, “Cotton Comes to Harlem”, and “A Man Called Horse”. Comedies included “The Landlord”, “Myra Breckinridge”, “The Out-of-Towners” and “There’s a Girl in My Soup.”

Albert Finney starred as Ebenezer in “Scrooge”, a role George C. Scott would also play in an 80s TV movie, earning an Emmy nomination.
