West Virginia Knocks Off #1 Baylor; Florida State Beats Duke

Baylor reached #1 in the AP College Basketball Poll for the first time ever this week, but they likely won’t be there next week. The Bears went to Morgantown to take on #10 West Virginia on January 10th, and the Mountaineers were more than up for the challenge.

Behind Nathan Adrian’s career high 22 points and a relentless defense that had 29 steals, West Virginia smothered Baylor 89-68. The Bears committed 29 turnovers in their first loss of the season, falling to 15-1 overall and 3-1 in the Big 12. Baylor had beaten four other Top 25 teams earlier this season. West Virginia improved to 14-2, 2-1 in the conference.

In other college basketball action, ninth ranked Florida State hosted #7 Duke. In the always stacked ACC, the Seminoles are emerging as yet another team to be reckoned with. Florida State led 41-37 at the half, and after falling behind 50-48, surged back to win 88-72. Florida State is now 16-1 overall, and 4-0 in the ACC. The Seminoles are in the midst of six games against Top 25 teams. They beat then #12 Virginia and #21 Virginia Tech, and will next play at #11 North Carolina on January 14th. They will then host #20 Notre Dame on January 18th and follow that with a trip to #14 Louisville on the 21st. It’s a brutal stretch, but that’s basketball life in the ACC.
