Virginia and Vanderbilt Vie for College World Series Title

College baseball doesn’t get nearly the publicity that college football and basketball get, but there is some good baseball played at this level and a lot of major league players have come out of the college ranks.  Division I’s College baseball post season begins with 64 teams, with eight advancing to the College World Series held in Omaha every June.  These eight teams play a double elimination format, with the final two teams playing a best of three series for the title.

This year, two teams who have never been to the finals will be competing for the title.  Virginia advanced by beating Mississippi 4-1 June 21st.  The Cavaliers will try to be the first ACC team to win the College World Series since Wake Forest in 1955.

Virginia’s opponent will be Vanderbilt.  The Commodores beat Texas 4-3 in 10 innings to advance.

Although this is Vandy’s first trip to the finals, Southeast Conference schools are frequent participants—and winners.  South Carolina won in both 2010-11, and LSU won it all six times between 1991 and 2009.
