That’s Not the Mel Robyn Gibson Knows

Even before People popped up yesterday with a report that Robyn Gibson was supporting her soon-to-be ex, Mel Gibson, I was having a conversation with a pal where we recalled O.J. Simpson’s ex-wife, Marguerite. Remember her? She came out during the O.J. murder case to state that O.J. was not abusive during their marriage because she would have taken a frying pan to his head.

Now, Robyn Moore Gibson reportedly has made a sworn statement in which she avers that Gibson was never physically abusive during their 28-year marriage and was a great father to their seven children.

This flies in the face of conventional wisdom — an abuser is an abuser is an abuser.

People reports that a source close to Robyn told them she “tried to stay out of this, but she wanted to make sure there was no speculation of what happened within her family.”

She doesn’t want people thinking that she would have put up with any abuse from Mel, but people will think it anyway. Already blogs are speculating that she has an ulterior motive, like spousal support, for taking Mel’s side after he dumped her for Oksana.

Maybe she’s just telling the truth. If so, it doesn’t make Mel a saint, just a late bloomer.

And she is not the only one coming out on Mel’s side. Experts are appearing on TV stating that they believe the tapes have been doctored. Hollywood Life spoke to Arlo West of Creative Forensic Services, and what he can say definitively about the Radar Online tapes is they “were professionally made for distribution.” He called the quality of the recordings “extraordinary” and said he would be willing bet “someone with a background in recording these types of messages helped Oksana do so to entrap Gibson.” The recordings, he continued, have been edited to eliminate words or phrases. Probably the parts where Oksana was pushing Mel’s buttons (Arlo didn’t say that last sentence, I did).

However, Dr. Lillian Glass says on her body language blog that even if the tapes were tampered with, Mel’s verbal rage and verbal abuse were not. It’s rage for real that could have gotten Oksana killed if the conversation wasn’t taking place on the telephone, according to Dr. Glass, who has an ulterior motive herself — she’s selling a book, called “Toxic Men.” She says:

“Whether she stimulated or “egged him on” as people have commented, there is still no excuse for Mel’s out of control behavior. When someone makes you that angry to the point that we have seen Mel’s anger escalate, you need to leave immediately. Get away from the person , make a legal arrangement to see you child, and never look back at the relationship!

“I am not definately blaming the victim. Any relationship involves two people. I say the same to Oksana as I say to Mel. If she heard his rage escalate to the point that it did, she needed to have left him long ag. She needed to have hired an attorney and needed to have never looked back.”

Here’s some advice for Dr. Glass too: Use spell-check.
