Spain Will Play Argentina in World Cup Final

Spain upset France 2-0 in Arlington, Texas on July 14th to advance to the championship match of the World Cup. Mikel Oyarzabal scored on a penalty kick at 22 minutes, and Pedro Porro added one more goal at the 58 minute mark. France was FIFA’s top ranked team, but Spain has now defeated them in three straight games.

In the other semifinal held in Atlanta, England took a 1-0 lead over Argentina on a goal by Anthony Gordon at 55 minutes. But after that, Argentina was relentless in its attack, constantly pressuring England and finally breaking through with a goal by Enzo Fernandez at 85 minutes to tie it. Two minutes into stoppage time, Lautaru Martinez scored the game winner. Lionel Messi had assists on both goals. England once again leaves disappointed; they won the Cup in 1966 in their only Final.

This is Spain’s second trip to a World Cup Final. They won the title in 2010. Argentina is making it’s seventh appearance. They are the defending champions, and have won three times (1978, 1986, and 2022. They were runners up in 1930, 1990, and 2014. The championship game is July 19th at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
