South Carolina Beats UCONN to Win NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship

South Carolina’s women’s basketball team was ranked #1 in the country since Day 1 this season, and the voters in the polls knew what they were doing. On April 3rd, SC easily beat UCONN 64-49 to win the NCAA title for the second time in school history (2017), both under coach Dawn Staley.

UCONN has the most titles with 11, all under long time coach Geno Auriemma, but South Carolina handed him his first loss in 12 title games. SC led 22-8 after the first quarter, and kept going from there. Destanni Henderson led the way with 26 points, a career high for her. Aliyah Boston, the women’s National Player of the Year, had a double double with 11 points and 16 rebounds.

The game was a dominant performance in a terrific season. South Carolina finishes 35-2, which includes a 14-0 record over Top 25 ranked teams.

Congratulations Coach Staley on your 2nd Tournament win and to the entire South Carolina team for a fantastic win. I’m sure Henderson will end up playing in the WNBA. Fantastic female NCAA March Madness tournament.
