Rockies Overcome Nine Run 1st Inning Deficit, Beat Pirates

Colorado Rockies fans have had almost nothing to cheer about this season. The club has been horrible all season and will most likely finish with the worst record in the major leagues. The Rockies’ game in Denver against the Pittsburgh Pirates on August 1st started out as yet another debacle, with the Pirates scoring nine runs in the first inning. Colorado chipped away with one in the first and three in the third, but Pittsburgh scored three in the fourth to counter that.

But Colorado hung in there with two more in the bottom of the fourth. The Pirates added three in the top of the fifth, but Colorado scored four in the bottom if the inning. Pittsburgh added one in the sixth, and after holding Colorado scoreless in the sixth and seventh, took a 16-10 lead into the bottom of the eighth. Colorado closed in to within four with a two run homer, but Pittsburgh still had a four run lead at 16-12 going into the bottom of the ninth.

But as Yogi Berra used to say, it’s not over until it’s over. Pirates reliever Dennis Santana struck out the first batter he faced, but then allowed a solo homer to Hunter Goodman. He then walked Jordan Beck. Warming Bernable drove Beck in with a triple, making it 16-14. Beranble scored on a Thairo Estrada single, and it was 16-15. Brenton Doyle then hit a two run homer to give the Rockies an improbable 17-16 victory.

Bernable led the Rockies with four RBIs, while five of his teammates had two each. Andrew McCutcheon drove in five for the Pirates, while Oneil Cruz drove in four. There were a total of 40 hits between the two teams.
