As White Sox Languish, Right Fielder Avisail Garcia Flourishes
The Chicago White Sox are having a ho hum season with a record of 28-36 through games of June 14th and in last place in the A.L. Central Division, though only six games behind division leading Minnesota. Although the White Sox as a whole are experiencing mediocrity, right fielder Avisail Garcia is emerging as a solid offensive force in the lineup.
Garcia, who turned 26 on June 12th, made his major league debut with the Detroit Tigers in 2012 and is in his third full season in both the majors and with the White Sox. His first two seasons were unremarkable, but the 2017 season is. Garcia is hitting an American League leading .339 with 10 homers and 48 RBIs. Here, Garcia drives in two runs in the White Sox 6-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles on June 13th:
Hitting behind Melky Cabrera and Jose Abreu gives Garcia plenty of opportunities to drive in runs. While the White Sox have a decent hitting lineup, they lack depth both at the plate and in the pitching department to be a serious contender for the playoffs. But then again, who thought the Minnesota Twins would be in the division lead in mid June?
