Pete Alonzo tops Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. in All Star Game’s Home Run Derby

It was a battle of two rookies in the All Star Game’s Home Run Derby. In the end, the New York Mets’ Pete Alonzo edged the Toronto Blue Jays’ Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. 23-22 in the final round to win the championship and the $1 million prize that goes with it. Guerrero set a record by hitting a whopping 91 total homers in the four rounds.

Alonzo is hitting .280 with 30 homers and 68 RBIs in 89 games, and is a good bet to win the National League’s Rookie of the Year Award. Guerrero opened the season in the minors after suffering an oblique muscle strain in spring training. He made his debut on April 26th. Guerrero, the son of Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero, was considered the top prospect in baseball. He’s hitting .249 with eight homers and 25 RBIs in 61 games.
