Lawrence Taylor Super Bowl XXV Ring Auction

Lawrence Taylor”s Super Bowl XXV ring has been put up for auction by his son, Lawrence Taylor, Jr. (aka JT) to the initial dismay of some who thought the Hall of Fame linebacker was the seller.

But it turned out that the Taylor Sr. gave the ring to his son as a gift and didn’t even know his son decided to sell it. But when he found out, Taylor Sr. confirmed that the ring does indeed belong to his son. JT describes it as showing “considerable wear, that in some eyes, only enhances its aura.” The ring has two football-shaped diamonds on a background of blue enamel and is surrounded by 17 smaller diamonds. Taylor’s last name is engraved on one side the ring above a Giants helmet and his number “56” appears underneath it.

The auction will end on Saturday, May 19th. The size 12 ring was expected to fetch up to $100,000. As of 10:30 p.m. ET Friday, the item is up to $98,525, so if you can top that, there’s still time …

So despite what some may have thought, the sale had nothing to do with the senior Taylor’s legal problems from last year when he was sentenced to 6 years’ probation in a plea bargain involving an an underage prostitute.

UPDATE: By midnight, May 20th, the auction was in extended bidding, 30 bids had been placed and the last bid was $192,001.
