Curtis was the recipient of a Grammy Legend Award in 1994 and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995, and a 2-time inductee in the Grammy Hall of Fame. He was also a 2-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Curtis passed away at 57 years old in 1999 from complications of diabetes.
