Jon Lester’s Novel Approach to Throwing to First Base

Chicago Cubs pitcher Jon Lester has come up with an interesting way to throw out a runner at first base. Basically, if you can’t pick the ball out of the glove to throw to first, just throw the glove and all, as he did here in the second inning of the April 19th Cubs vs. San Diego Padres game:

Some credit should also go to first baseman Anthony Rizzo, for his great catch. We guess he maybe dropped his own glove because one was included in the throw.

The Cubs still lost the game 5-2. Jon Lester dropped to 0-2 on the season with a 6.89 ERA in three starts. We figure that’s not what the Cubs had in mind when they signed the left hander to a six year $155 million contract over the winter, but the season is still young.
