Jeopardy All Stars: Teams Ken, Austin, Julia, Game 1 Part 2 (2-26-19)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (2/26/2019) in the category “European Artists” was:

His seldom-used last name reflects his birth near the mouth of a river that flows from the Alps to the North Sea

On the 5th day of the 2019 Jeopardy! All Stars tournament, Alex Trebek said “Welcome to the second round of the first half of Match No. 2… I think I got that right.” (I thought I’d leave that to Alex since I use the words game and match interchangeably). So it’s Game 1, Part 2 for Team Ken, Team Austin and Team Julia. Their remaining 6 members will play the Double Jeopardy! round and Final Jeopardy in the continuation of yesterday’s match.

Repeating the lineups for this 2-day match:
• Team Ken: Jeopardy: Ken Jennings; DJ: Matt Jackson; FJ: Monica Thieu
• Team Austin: Jeopardy: Austin Rogers; DJ: Roger Craig; FJ: Leonard Cooper
• Team Julia: Jeopardy: Ben Ingram; DJ: Seth Wilson; FJ: Julia Collins

Here are the results from the Jeopardy round again:

Ken Jennings finished in the lead with $9,800. Ben Ingram was second with $5,600 and Austin Rogers was last with $2,800.

The players in today’s Double Jeopardy round were Matt Jackson, Roger Craig and Seth Wilson:

Matt found the first Daily Double in “Lakes & Rivers” under the $800 clue on the 13h pick. He was in the lead with $19,000 now. Seth had $10,400 and Roger had $1,600. He bet $8,500 and he was RIGHT.

Matt found the last Daily Double in “Ancient Agriculture” under the $1,200 clue, with a dozen clues left after it. He was in the lead with $29,100. Seth had $10,400 and Roger had $2,400. He bet $4,000 and he was RIGHT.

Matt finished in the lead with $37,500. Seth was next with $11,200 and Roger was last with $6,800.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS REMBRANDT (VAN RIJN)?

No. 1 of Mental Floss’ 2017 article 15 Facts about Rembrandt for his Birthday says: “His full name—Rembrant Harmenszoon van Rijn—requires a bit of parsing. Harmenszoon means that his father’s name was Harmen, and van Rijn refers to where his family lived, near the Rhine River. So his full name means Rembrant, son of Harmen, from the Rhine. For reasons that are unclear, he added the silent “d” to his signature, changing it from Rembrant to Rembrandt, in 1633.” His birthday, by the way, was July 15, 1606.

The remaining team members took over for Final Jeopardy:

Leonard Cooper got it right. He bet $1,200 bringing the score for Team Austin up to $8,000.

Julia Collins came up with Michelangelo. She bet and lost it all so Team Julia is at zero for this game. We’ll have to check her Twitter later to see if she shares what misled her.

Monica Thieu got it right. She bet $2,503 so Team Ken won this game with $40,003.

Final Jeopardy (2/26/2019) Monica Thieu, Leonard Cooper and Julia Collins

Tomorrow, these teams will play the deciding game of their match and the cumulative total of the two games will determine who joins Team Brad in the final and who goes on to the Wild Card games.

These two clues were the only triple stumpers in the round:

LEADERS ($1200) Comic songs and sounds were his forte as 1940s bandleader of the City Slickers

JUST THE FACTS ($800) The 2 Asian apes are the orangutan & this arboreal one (The #2 segment in this video is a riot).

Alex has trouble with foreign word pronunciation. I knew the name was Rembrandt Van Rijn, NOT “von”. He pronounced it “von Rhine” but more accurately it’s as if spelled in English “van Rin.”

  2. Albert says:

Did anybody notice that there isn’t one player over 50 years of age? I find that highly ironic because as one ages one’s knowledge level continues to increase.

  3. VJ says:

Well, even if you don’t like his playing style, you have to give Matt Jackson props for his performance today. Look at what he added to Team Ken’s score. Can’t wait to see if Ken can match that in tomorrow’s Double Jeopardy round.

    • Cece says:

Was Matt bulldozing again, VJ? 🙂

      • VJ says:

yeah, he dominated that round but he only cut Alex off once 😀

If you take away what he made on the DDs, he still had a runaway $25K

        • Cece says:

Boom! I was hoping whatever team Ben Ingram was in, would be the winner. But now I see that there’s no way. So I’ll be happy if the team Matt is in wins. [slow smile].

        • VJ says:

Well, Team Julia is down but not out yet — it’s not inconceivable that they can score over $21,800 and scoop up a Wild Card. One of those easy second row DDs could be just the ticket. And I suppose it’s not inconceivable that one of the other teams will bomb tomorrow.

  4. John Christian Ambion says:

Oh dear, if today’s performance will be the same as tomorrow’s performance, Team Julia is in trouble. Losing all of $11,200 means it’s all coming down to tomorrow’s game. @Richard, you’re right. I can’t stand him either, so whoever the third team is, I will support.

  5. John B./I. says:

It looks like congratulations are in order for Matt, Monica and (team) Ken. They are in, no matter what happens tomorrow. The “olive oil” (KJB) or” olive trees” in the official RC bible was really tricky. Milk and honey is sort of a standard answer…..Ken obviously trusted his teammates and they came through, big time.
Michelangelo was also only the first name of Simoni, but the Arno empties into the Med (Tyrrhenian Sea) near Pisa… . Some kind of a short circuit, maybe Julia concentrated too much on the artist and overlooked the “North Sea” part of the clue? M. would fit the clue in terms of names (known by his first one) but he was born near Firenze.

  6. Lou says:

Matt is pretty fast today he practically dominated the game. I also thought Julia knew Rembrandt as well. But still though we will see what happens tomorrow hopefully the scores will improve for Julia’s team. Was Michelangelo born before or after Rembrandt John and VJ? I also thought Roger was able to catch up to Matt as well.

    • VJ says:

@Lou, Michelangelo was about 25 at the turn of the 16th century. Rembrandt was 17th century.

I was so stunned… as I remember it, art was a strong suit for Julia and she said as much in the strategy session as well. Maybe the geography threw her off ?? but I still don’t see how she connected a river to Buonarroti ???

      • Albert says:

I think Julia focused on Alps and thought it was the Italian Alps, which lead to her guess of Michelangelo. I made the same mistake as Julia and focused on Italian painters and wrongly guessed Titian.

I felt so sorry for Julia. She looked so sad and dejected.

    • Richard Corliss says:

Yeah. He doesn’t care for losing.

  7. VJ says:

This is the second time, Roger Craig had a problem with Manitoba. Today it was this clue in Lakes & Rivers: Boundary lake is shared by North Dakota & this Canadian province. — it only cost him $1200 this time.

The other time, it cost a lot more when it was a Daily Double in the last game of the Battle of the Decades. (a video of what happened is on that recap)

P.S. There was another triple stumper in the round in Ancient Agriculture ($2000) Deuteronomy 8:8 promises a land not of milk & honey but of this salad dressing “and honey”

    • Richard Corliss says:

This is the first time Monica is on the champion’s lectern.
This is the first time Leonard, David, & Monica have been on the new studio.

  8. Richard Corliss says:

Stop it. I can’t stand Matt Jackson being fast.
