Halloween 2020: Full Moon and Blue Moon!

A full moon on Halloween is more uncommon than we may think, according to the Farmer’s Almanac. But what is truly rare about the 2020 Halloween full moon is that people will be able to see it in all time zones.

In 2001, there was a full moon on Halloween but it was only visible in the Central and Pacific time zones. A full moon for everyone hasn’t been seen since 1944. As for it also being a blue moon, Farmer’s Almanac offers this Fun Fact: “Any time the Moon is technically ‘full’ on October 31st (as it will be this year), it would also have to be a Blue Moon because the lunar cycle is only 29.5 days long.”

Here is a video from SciShow with 8 Truths and Myths About the Full Moon, if you’ve got 11 minutes to spare:

And here is my all-time favorite moon song: Blue Moon by the Marcels. I believe this clip is from the 2014 PBS “Rock, Pop and Doo Wop” special, uniting some original members of the Marcels (from Pittsburgh, PA) with current members for an AMAZING live performance!

I’ve never been one to enjoy/pay attention/care about Halloween but, once in a Blue Moon stuff, oh yeah—love that lunacy. So thanks for this post and Happy Halloween!

But VJ, that’s 11 minutes of my life I’ll never get back! I kid, I enjoyed the video, very interesting (though the narrator is a little on the annoying side) 🙂 I also wish I could unsee the part about the dung beetle—omg! and people are repulsed by cucarachas?

Happy Halloween, Cece! I agree about the narrator, but somehow the things scientists decide to conduct a study on is a source of never-ending fascination to me.

How much time and money do we suppose it cost them to find out that corals know when the moon is full, or, for that matter, that dung beetles can use the polarization of the full moon to make a straight line. ha ha ha ha ha!!!
