Four Top 10 Teams Fall in College Football’s Weekend

Four of the top ten college football teams in the AP Poll went down to defeat on October 13th, including two who fell from the ranks of the unbeaten. All of the vanquished lost to conference foes.

In a big Southeast Conference matchup, #13 LSU hosted #2 Georgia. The Tigers got off to a 16-0 halftime lead and went on to finish off the Bulldogs 36-16. LSU rushed for 275 yards, 66 of which were from QB Joe Burrow. Burrow rushed for two of the Tiger’s touchdowns. Cole Tracy kicked five field goals for LSU. Both teams improved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the SEC; the Tigers moved up to #5 in the AP Poll while the Bulldogs fell to #8.

In Ames, Iowa, #6 West Virginia lost to Iowa State 30-14 for the Mountaineers first loss of the season. The Cyclones are becoming famous for taking down ranked teams; they’ve beaten five of the last seven Top 25 teams they’ve faced. West Virginia was held to just 152 total yards, while the Cyclones’ rushed for 244 yards and had 254 passing yards and three touchdowns from QB Brock Purdy. The Mountaineers are now 5-1, 3-1 in the Big 12, while Iowa State improved to 2-2, and 3-3. West Virginia dropped to #13.

Out in Eugene, Oregon, the 17th ranked Ducks scored a touchdown in overtime to beat the #7 Washington Huskies 30-27. Washington had kicked a field goal in OT, but Oregon’s C.J. Verdell scored the game winner on a six yard run. The Ducks (5-1, 2-1 in the Pac-12) moved up to 12th in the poll, while the Huskies (5-2, 3-1) dropped to 15th.

Finally, in State College, Pennsylvania, #8 Penn State lost to Michigan State 21-17 on a touchdown pass from Brian Lewerke to Felton Davis with nine seconds left in the game. Last year, the Spartans kicked a field goal as time expired to beat Penn State 27-24. This season , Penn State has lost two in a row in heartbreaking fashion; two weeks ago, Ohio State scored two fourth quarter touchdowns for a come from behind 27-26 victory. Penn State (4-2, 1-2 in the Big Ten) dropped 10 places to #18.

Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson, Notre Dame, and LSU are at the top of the poll.
