TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHAT IS THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT?
After his death in 1799, plans to erect a monument to the Father of our Nation were kicked around until finally, in 1833, the Washington National Monument Society formed and hired architect Robert Mills. The Society began construction in 1848 but, the structure wasn’t even half of its intended 555 feet when funds ran out in 1854. That’s where things still stood until July 1876 when Sen. John Sherman proposed that Congress take action to complete the Washington Monument. An act was passed and signed by President Grant on Aug. 2, 1876. The capstone was set in Dec. 1884, and on Feb. 21, 1885 (the day before Washington’s birthday), the dedication ceremony was held. Sen. Sherman, as the person who got the ball rolling again, was given the privilege of being the first speaker. The Sherman Room blog has pictures and more details.
This is the first Final Jeopardy! about Sen. John Sherman and the first that didn’t have something to do with his Anti-Trust Act, his Silver Purchase Act or his brother, William Tecumseh Sherman.
Marianne got it right. She bet $5,000 and finished with $10,400.
Kate also got it right. She bet $8,000 and finished with $28,200.
Maddie thought it was the St. Louis Arch. She lost $20,000 and finished with $600. That made Kate Roesch the new Jeopardy! champ.
A triple stumper from each round. (Please don’t put the answers in the comments)
NICKNAMES ($600) The standard American WWI training aircraft, the Curtiss JN-4, had this female nickname
CAMEOS ($1600) In a blink-&-you-missed-it cameo, he appears as Vanisher in “Deadpool 2”
2 years ago: TWO of the players got this FJ in “BEFORE THEY WERE AUTHORS”
While working for British naval intelligence during World War II, he was code-named 17F show

I thought FJ was obvious, especially with the “Senator” reference. Wasn’t sure if that was the same Sherman as the one in the antitrust act, but that was irrelevant. I felt smart for once knowing the last 2 DDs and FJ (& should have nailed that easy first DD).
Terrific game, all 3 played well, and anyone could have won.
Was grinding my teeth over those three missed clues in the betting category. But those really were tough if you didn’t have experience in that field. The Don Quixote/Sancho stumper wasn’t difficult, especially in light of the category title.
Well associating Sherman with the Anti-Trust Act would at least point you to the time period (1890)
True, except there was no time period/year specified in the clue or category. Which I guess is why Maddie went with the Arch.
I thought 1890s-ish, sure to Sen Sherman, and first said “The Statue of Liberty”. But, with about 5 seconds left, I got Washington Monument. I don’t know if I would have had enough time to write it in, à la Sadie Goldberger.
I was thinking Maddie was going to leave clues on the board, as slow as she was selecting them.
Not only of the Anti-Trust Act, but, also, younger brother to Gen William Tecumseh Sherman!
Yes, and also Sherman’s Silver Purchase Act, like it says in the part of the recap about other Sherman Jeopardy clues that went unnoticed
My goodness, I’m sorry VJ – I looked right past that! You put so much work into this site. I don’t want you to think I don’t appreciate it!!
Thanks, Jason. I dunno, maybe I should put the shorter part first so it gets noticed. But I thought the Sherman Room blog had some good stuff over there.
Hmmmm…………I wouldn’t have considered the Washington Monument as being a work of art, but rather a tribute to our first president. Anyways, we all went with the Space Needle for FJ. It was an incorrect response, but at least it had some resemblance to artwork. Nevertheless, it was a great game, and I did quite well in it.
What an exciting game between Maddie and Kate. They both had over 20,000 going into FJ! The difference was Kate got Final correct and Maddie didn’t and wagered way too big and lost. Big payday for Kate to end the week. We still haven’t had a game this season where all three players got Final correct. When was the last time at the exact date that all three players answered correctly in FJ!
Kevin, I came up with July 10, 2024, and also 2 days before that from this weekly recap.
