WHO IS OSCAR WILDE?

The passage in the clue is from the end of Part IV of “The Ballad of Reading Gaol”, concerning a hanging that took place when Oscar Wilde was imprisoned there. After Wilde’s death in Paris on 11/30/1900 at age 46, he was interred in a modest grave in the Cimetière de Bagneux. His first epitaph was the Latin translation of Job 29:22. Wilde’s remains were transferred to Père Lachaise Cemetery in 1909 and a monument by Jacob Epstein was erected, inscribed with four lines from “Reading Gaol”, and dedicated in 1912. Johnny Gilbert said “also” after their hometown during the contestant introductions segment. Possibly the first time that’s ever heard.

Looks like gabe couldn’t string a few more wins. But we finished off the week with a strong streaker. Let’s see how laurel does next week. VJ, did the contestants get confused on today’s final with the epitaph of Oscar Wilde or were they off by a few years?

    • VJ says:

I don’t know what you mean, Lou. Two of them just picked the wrong Irish poet, that’s all. I guess they didn’t remember Yeats’ epitaph from that earlier game this past April (if they saw it, that is).

It looked like it was a pretty frustrating game for Gabe. The bottom-to-top approach wasn’t working out too hot but he did manage to get within striking distance of Laurel’s big lead.

Sorry about that. I meant to ask did the wording of the clue in final jeopardy kind of threw the players off track a bit and they went for Yeats instead of Wilde? I hope it should clear up the confusion.
