Final Jeopardy: Folklore (9-20-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (9/20/2018) in the category “Folklore” was:

In legend, he called all the animals together but only 12 came, including a rat & a dragon

6x champ Kyle Jones, a music teacher from Aurora, CO, has now won $127,203. In Game 7, his challengers are: Bucky McMahon, an adventure travel writer from Tallahassee, FL; and Amanda Levreault, a production manager from Chicopee, MA.

As anticipated yesterday, we’re back to a clean-shaven Alex Trebek today.

Round 1 Categories: Space Probes – Pro Football Hall of Famers by Team – Toys & Games – How Cheap Were They? – Reading – The T Leaves

Kyle found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Toys & Games” under the $1,000 clue on the 14th pick of the round. He was in second place with $2,400, $400 less than Amanda’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Kyle finished in the lead with $10,000. Amanda was second with $2,800 and Bucky was last at negative $600.

Round 2 Categories: Acting the Part – Islands in the Sea – 8-Letter Words – Orange You Glad – Australian History – Only at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Kyle found the first Daily Double in “8-Letter Words” under the $2,000 clue on the 15th pick. He was in the lead with $14,400 at this point, $6,800 more than Amanda in second place. He bet $4,000 and he was RIGHT.

4 clues later, Kyle found the last Daily Double in “Australian History” under the $1,200 clue. In the lead with $19,200 now, he had $11,200 more than Amanda in second place. He bet $3,000 and took a guess with royalty. That was WRONG.

Kyle finished in the lead with a runaway $20,200. Amanda was next with $8,800 and Bucky was in third place with $4,600.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS BUDDHA

Note: It didn’t come up on the show, but the Jade Emperor should have been accepted, too.

As with all folklore, there are differing versions of how the Chinese Zodiac came to be. According to this Mythology page: “Some say that the Jade Emperor called a race of animals on his birthday to create the Chinese zodiac. Others say that it was in fact, the Buddha who did. Nevertheless, both stories are essentially the same, excluding some minor details. According to myths, the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac were selected through a race.” In this version, there was a tournament where the animals had to do battle with each other.

Here’s an old clue on the topic that was a lot easier: ASTROLOGY ($600) Chinese astrology has 5 classical elements, each associated with a planet; knock this when you think Jupiter

Bucky came up with Merlin. He bet and lost it all.

Amanda thought it was Confucius. She only lost $401 bet, finishing with $8,399.

Kyle went with Noah. He lost $2,000 and won the game with the remaining $18,200. His 7-day total $145,403.

Final Jeopardy (9/20/2018) Kyle Jones, Bucky McMahon, Amanda Levreault

A triple stumper from each round:

READING ($600) In “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark”, Michelle McNamara detailed her quest for the Calif. murderer she dubbed this

AUSTRALIAN HISTORY ($2000) An Australian Robin Hood to some, this Down Under bandit was captured in 1880 and faced the hangman

Poor Bucky…he looked very uncomfortable. He clearly could not manage the buzzer. He turned his head to look at every response. Too bad

    • rhonda says:

Yes, I felt badly for Bucky, too, it’s a shame the buzzer was giving him so much trouble.

    • William Weyser says:

1 thing I did like about Bucky was that after Final Jeopardy!, he walked away from the podium, and then, walked back. Other than that, and what he did during the intro, it was not his day.

  2. William Weyser says:

$145,403 is $200 less than the amount of money that Hunter Appler won in 6 wins.

    • John Christian Ambion says:

@William That is $11,000+ short of Ryan Fenster’s winnings in 7 games and $18,000+ short of Josh Hill’s winnings in the same situation. A win tomorrow means that he will be the new man to beat.

  3. John Christian Ambion says:

Wow, what a bummer, a Triple Stumper on a clue which sounds very easy, but Kyle made a runaway game and now he joins Josh Hill and Ryan Fenster as 7-time champions.

  4. Lou says:

I was quite disappointed in Bucky’s answer of Merlin. Are you kidding me? Merlin is a wizard in the king Arthur’s Camelot stories and has nothing to do with the animals of the zodiac or the jade emperor. VJ you heard of the Camelot stories and the characters right? Plus any adventure travel writers who read it or heard heard about the Chinese zodiac should know this one. How did he confuse ancient China with medieval England? Still congrats to Kyle on his seventh win. This final jeopardy should have been a cakewalk.

    • John Christian Ambion says:

@Lou Oh dear, Amanda came very close to come up, but all three ended with a stump. Think they did not know that folklore.

    • VJ says:

yes, Amanda recognized the significance of 12 and the 2 animals named in the clue– that it was connected to China. The clue itself didn’t say anything about China or anywhere else, Lou, and Kyle went biblical with it so I think you’re being too rough on Bucky.

Besides, you get on Jeopardy after you pass the test and audition and you don’t know if they are gonna throw a DD or FJ at you that is something you never heard of or something that is tailor-made for you, like that Colorado State Song DD Kyle got the other day.

  5. VJ says:

The How Cheap category today was a hoot!

Congrats to Kyle on the runaway. As for FJ, no big deal, imo — nobody had to worry about where they would end up if they got it wrong.

  6. John B./I. says:

Congratulations to Kyle for yet another win, a BOO HISS however to the writers. The Jade Emperor is another legend, but obviously they would have accepted it. VJ said it all. And no boo hiss to the other players. The way the clue was written (and chosen) there was hardly a way to get it right – just look at the answers:Merlin, Confucius and Noah (who had ALL animals if you go by the Bible).
Hence my immediate zero prediction. The answers were not even in the same town as the ballpark. But I don’t put the blame on the players.
Check this FJ off as a win for Kyle, otherwise just forget it. Knuckleballs are fine for FJ (they do this a lot ) but todays FJ clue….at least not thoroughly researched, way too ambiguous for a FJ. Let’s hope for a better FJ clue to end the week tomorrow.
