Final Jeopardy: Oscar-Nominated Songs (9-16-15)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (9/16/2015) in the category “Oscar-Nominated Songs” was:

This song from a 1999 animated film about censorship had a word censored from its Oscar performance.

New champ Audrey Watkins-Fox won $25,400 in yesterday’s game. Today she defends her title against these two challengers: Kevin Butterfield, from Norman, OK; and Talia Lavin, from Teaneck, NJ.

Round 1: Audrey found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “History” under the $600 clue before the first commercial break and right after she lost $400 in the same category. She was in second place with $1,000, $800 less than Kevin’s lead. She made it a true Daily Double and she was RIGHT.

Audrey finished in the lead with $5,000 and Kevin was second with $4,800. Talia really had a tough time in this round but she managed to get out of the hole and finished with $600.

Round 2: Kevin found the first Daily Double in “Minor Gods & Goddesses” under the $1,200 clue on the third pick of the round. He was in the lead with $6,000, $1,000 more than Audrey in second place. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

Talia found the last Daily Double in “Very Inventive” under the $1,200 clue. She had caught up splendidly and was now in a second place tie with Audrey. They both had $6,600, $200 less than Kevin’s lead. She bet $2,000 and took a guess with “Whistler.” That was WRONG.

Audrey finished in the lead with $12,600. Kevin was next with $7,600 and Talia was in third place with $600.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “BLAME CANADA”?

The song is one of many from the film “South Park Longer, Bigger and Uncut.” It was one of the Best Original Song nominees at the 72nd Academy Awards (“You’ll be in My Heart” from “Tarzan” won). The song is led by Kyle’s mother, Sheila Broflovski, in the film. She wants everyone to blame Canada for the bad behavior of the South Park children who sneaked in to see a Canadian film by foul-mouthed fart-joke comics Terrance and Philip.

Talia wrote down “The Love Ballad of Turd Ferguson” (an SNL Jeopardy! parody reference) and a shoutout to her mom. She bet and lost her whole $600.

Kevin came up with “Persepolis.” He lost his $6,300 bet and finished with $1,300.

Audrey wrote down “Toy Story.” She only bet $5,000 so she won the match with $7,600 and now has a 2-day total of $33,000.

After Trebek told the players it was “Blame Canada,” he added “Don’t they always do that?”

It would have been totes cool if Kevin had made an Ed Kim move, bet nothing and we got to see a tie-breaker. Oh, well, some day our tie-breaker will come.

During the chat, Audrey talked about spending her honeymoon at the Turner Classic Movies Film Festival and getting to watch 13 black and white films in 2 days. Trebek said he watched 13 movies on his first honeymoon, too, but apparently, he didn’t enjoy it as much as Audrey did.

I guess aaaa means 9 clues unplayed in the whole game, right?

I don’t know what to make of this game —kinda strange…. Talia was a nervous wreck, which I guess affected her performance.

Yes, there were 3 in the first round and I attributed that to Talia’s rambling chat. Then there were 6 in the second and I really have no idea why that happened.

You’re right, VJ —I had forgotten about that long winded chat, geez. But since that didn’t affect the 2nd round, I wonder what the hell happened.there.

I like anything Robin Williams, so I appreciated the video. 🙂

Poor Talia, I could sure sympathize with her being so nervous. I

And while she seems to have won the Internet yesterday with the Turd Ferguson bit, I totally missed the (funny) reference as I’ve never watched SNL or heard of the skit.

NIne clues unplayed total in the first two rounds is pretty high.
