Final Jeopardy: 19th Century American Women (8-13-21)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (8/13/2021) in the category “19th Century American Women” was:
2 of the 3 women depicted on the first statue of real women in Central Park, unveiled in August 2020
17x champ Matt Amodio, a PhD student from New Haven, CT has won $547,600 so far. In Game 18 and the last game of Season 37, he takes on these two players: Eric Shi, a product manager orig. from Houston, TX; and Nicolle Neulist,a chart caller and freelance writer from Chicago, IL.
From VJ: A big thanks to all my visitors for hanging out with me and my helpers throughout Season 37. And a big hug to my helpers, Nikki and Shannon. Thanks so much to all of you. It’s been quite a bumpy ride in Season 37. We lost much-loved host Alex Trebek on 11/8/2020 and although we all knew it was coming, it would have been too soon no matter when it happened. Thanks to the Jeopardy! staff for keeping it together and bringing us new games, and thanks to all the guest hosts for contributing their time to help Jeopardy! donate almost 3 million to charity.

Nicolle found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Idioms” under the $800 clue on the 8th pick of the round. She was in second place with $2,000, $1,000 less than Matt in the lead. She made it a true Daily Double and she was RIGHT.
A jug does it; a sieve and an improbable story don’t show
Nicolle finished in the lead with $7,000. Matt was second with $6,600 and Eric was last with $4,000. No clues went uncovered.
Round 2 Categories: Canals – Novel Vocabulary – Helen, Not of Troy – Crossword Clues “Q” – Lost – Foundry
Matt found the first Daily Double in “Novel Vocabulary” under the $1,200 clue on the 4th pick. He was tied with Nicolle for the lead at $7,800 now. They both had $3,800 more than Eric in third. He bet the whole $7,800 and he was RIGHT.
This title heroine of a 1913 novel now means someone who’s cheerful to the point of being irritating show
Nicolle got the last Daily Double in “Lost” under the $2,000 clue on the 14th pick. In second place with $15,800, she had $4,600 less than Matt’s lead. She bet $5,000 and tried the Israelites right when time was up. That was WRONG anyway.
The biblical Asher and Zebulun were 2 of these that, despite the name, reached the Promised Land show
Matt finished in the lead with $27,200. At $13,600, Nicolle had half of that. Eric was in third place with $2,400. No clues went uncovered.
Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHO ARE 2 OF SOJOURNER TRUTH, ELIZABETH CADY STANTON & SUSAN B. ANTHONY?
Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906) and Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815-1902) and Sojourner Truth (1797-1883) were 19th century American abolitionists and women’s rights activists. August 26, 2020 was the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, granting women the right to vote. A statue was planned and commissioned to mark the occasion in NYC’s Central Park. It was created by American artist Meredith Bergmann. Originally, only Anthony and Stanton were to be in the sculpture; however, objections to the omission of the contributions of women of color were resolved when Sojourner Truth was added to the design.
On the About Us page of Monumental Women’s website, they say “All three women were not only Women’s Rights Pioneers, but New Yorkers as well. They were all abolitionists who supported universal suffrage. They were all contemporaries who often attended the same meetings and spoke on the same stages. It is only fitting that they share the same pedestal.” There’s also a video of Monumental Women’s live event unveiling the Women’s Rights Pioneers Monument on the website’s home page.
Eric had a smiley face in lieu of an answer. Knowing that Nicolle had to bet it all, he bet nothing and remained at $2,400.
Nicolle thought it was Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth. She bet the whole $13,600 and wound up with zero.
Matt got it right with Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. He bet $1.00 and won the game with $27,201. His 18-day total is $574,801.
Horning in on the Idiom category: That was a real nail-biter! What a game to end Season 37! Matt Amodio’s exciting reign will continue on September 13th, 2021 when Season 38 begins. He’ll be going for his 19th win.
A triple stumper from each round:
IDIOMS ($400) The TV series “Entourage” got people changing plain old “hug” into this 3-word phrase
HELEN, NOT OF TROY ($1000) Her staining technique set her apart from other abstract expressionists & influenced younger artists
5 years ago: Only ONE of the players got this FJ in “Names in the News”
This 52-year-old went through a temporary growth spurt, growing 2 inches in less than a year, as revealed by a 2016 physical. show

I really thought Nicolle was going to be the first player in a long time to have the lead after her daily double. She was halfway there in final jeopardy but it got her…
I was ecstatic to hear Matt say, during the chat, he wanted to be a professor because of the research. Imo it’s the best profession in the world. He will be a great professor. The quickness of his mind and his ability to retain information means he won’t be a boring lecturer. I can see his classes filling up fast not because he was on Jeopardy but because he’s just good with knowledge. People love to learn when they are not being bored to death by a professor standing in front of them reading from a textbook or lecture notes. Congratulations Matt!
I thought of you when he said that, Jacob, and figured you would love it
Matt, gentleman that he is, gave Nicolle the opportunity to win . If he was wrong and she was right, he felt she deserved to win. Good sportsmanship from the true champion that he is.
Hi, Mickey O. I like that take on Matt’s bet the best 😁
Then why doesn’t he pull a Cliff Claven and bet it all on every Final Jeopardy? You know, to be a gentleman and give everybody the opportunity to win? No, it was a stupid bet, and he got lucky.
I figured matt would bet $0 or $1. According to game theory would it be statistically better for matt to bet zero or $1? Then again, matt beimg a phd student in computers picked $1. I guess it may depend on the strength of your opponent and the FJ category. If i were in matts position i would bet $1 on u.s. presidents or the british monarchy, but i would bet zero on astronomy or the u.s. space program.
I agree, he should have bet $0 and played for a possible tie-breaker. If she’d been right and he wrong, he’d have lost by $1. He’s missed several finals during his run.
Wow! Great finish to the season Matt! Keep winning until you pass Ken Jennings
Found it funny that Nicolle fit the description of a Pollyanna as that was one of the answers today.
I said the same thing! I know a lot of folks find Matt irritating, although I do not, but I was yelling at the TV cheering for Matt to win because as great a player as Nicholle was (and she was great) I just found her mannerisms irritating.
Thank you once again VJ for being our star for this incredible season of jeopardy. It was a spectacular roller coaster ride. We all miss alex but still we will see you again in one month when season 38 begins.
That was another scare that Matt avoided so far but still he came out strong today. Definitely looking forward to seeing him again in September. We appreciate the hard work you’ve done here.
VJ, thanks very much for being our rock during so many seasons of our favorite show. We miss Alex but we’ll miss you, too. We’ll cheer on Nikki (and Matt) next season but our best wishes to you. I think a Spock quote says it all – Live long and prosper!
Thanks, Sam, but I didn’t mean to imply that I am not going to still be working on the site. I will continue to work on the recaps as long as I am able to.
Nikki wants to see if she can add some more variety around here.
Another scare thrown at Matt – this time by Nicole – but the FJ was sorta in his wheelhouse. I thought he might have wagered zero, but kudos for taking the unnecessary risk. Maybe he thought a tie would blemish his run.
And he survived any Friday the 13th jinx.
hehe
I disagree. I think the $1.00 bet was stupid. Better to tie and live to play another day. Made me angry in fact. Unless he really believed he would know the answer. Still, why not play a good competitor again and see if you can beat her. He did not calculate the odds or the stats.
If this made you angry…you have some problems. It wasnt your game.
You’re right about the wager, more or less, but they now have a tie-breaker question after Final Jeopardy. No longer do tied contestants come back the next show.
What a way to end Season 37. I thought that we were going to see a tiebreaker but Nicolle missed and wagered everything and Matt got it right and wagered $1 which is the correct wager. We’ll look forward to seeing Matt again in exactly one month from today.
Didn’t matter if he bet $1.00 or $10,000. Stupid bet.
It’s 2021, not 2020. Also, I was kind of late for Fikkle Fame on Season 37, but I just want to say, you are very welcome and thanks for posting the recaps everyday and for being the best staff member of Fikkle Fame ever!
Also, Go Matt Go!
You are still doing it! I hope you will win more money in Season 38!
Yeah, I was already in the process of fixing that typo.
Also, I guess I will be a staff member of Fikkle Fame when I transfer ownership of the site to Nikki in Season 38, but FYI, I created this website by myself and have owned it since 2010.
Oh, but thanks for being a nice person in Season 37! You rock!
