WHAT IS SURFING THE INTERNET?

In “Birth of a Metaphor”, librarian Jean Armour Polly explains how she came up with the word “surfing” as a way to describe navigating the internet while writing an article for the Wilson Library Bulletin. Perhaps it was the word navigating itself that made her want “something fishy, net-like, nautical.” As it really happened, she was using a mouse pad from the Apple Library that had an image of a surfer on a big wave. The image caption was “Information Surfer”.

At this point, you’d expect to read that “Surfing the Internet” was an immediate success. But that’s not exactly what happened. Nonetheless, Mrs. Polly was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame in 2019, credited with being one of the first librarians to offer free computer access the public (1981), as well as other educational accomplishments.
