Final Jeopardy: Major League Baseball (7-30-15)
The Final Jeopardy question (7/30/2015) in the category “Major League Baseball” was:
This major league team’s colors are Sedona red, Sonoran sand and black.
New champ Colby Potter won $200 in yesterday’s game. It wasn’t much but he’s still the returning champ. Today he takes on these two players: Andy King, originally from Chatham Center, NY; and Amanda Bruchs, from Silver Spring, MD.
Round 1: Andy found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Medical History” under the $1,000 clue. He was in the lead with $5,000, $400 ahead of Colby in second place. He bet $1,000 and finally said the shock machine. That was WRONG.
Sometimes during surgery the heart convulses, loses rhythm and stops pumping blood. Cleveland surgeon Claude Beck used cardiac massage and applied electrical current directly to the heart to reverse the phenomenon using this device. Those techniques led him to develop CPR.

Colby finished in the lead with $5,000. Andy was second with $3,000 and Amanda was in the hole for $200.
Round 2: Andy found the first Daily Double in “Mayors” under the $1,200 clue. He was in the lead with $6,600, $2,400 more than Colby in second place. He bet $2,000 again and. this time, he was RIGHT.
Mayor Dave Bing had the unhappy task of announcing that this city had declared bankruptcy. show
Amanda found the last Daily Double in “Christian Denominations” under the $1.200 clue. In second place with $5,400, she had $4,800 less than Andy’s lead. She bet $2,500 and thought it was the Greek Orthodox church. That was WRONG.
This church gets its name from the Greek for “fiftieth”. show
Andy finished in the lead with a runaway $16,200. Amanda was next with $4,500 and Colby was in third place with $4,200.
ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHAT ARE THE ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS?
MLB.com reported on the Diamondback color choices when the change occurred back in 2006: “After consulting with fans and designers, the D-backs decided … to ditch the purple, teal and copper look for a Sedona red, Sonoran sand and black motif. In addition, the team tweaked it’s “D” logo, giving it a more modern look. The deep red color was called Sedona in honor of the famous red rocks in the mountain town of the same name to the north. The beige color is referred to as Sonoran sand in deference to the Sonoran desert.
From 2010: U.S. STAMPS ($1000) This city’s red sandstone rock formations are featured on a stamp celebrating Arizona’s statehood
Colby bet $4,197. He finished with $8,397.
Amanda bet $2,000 and finished with $6,500.
Andy added $4,000 to his already winning score so he won the match with $20,200 and, once again, we have a brand new champ.
During the chat, Andy let Trebek know that he comes from a family of loyal viewers. One of his son Henry’s first words was “Jeppy” and he also conveyed a hello from Henry to Trebek.

You typed “during surgery the heart convulses, loses rhythm and starts pumping….”. It should say stops pumping !
OK thanks, it was hard for me to get that clue
That sounds like my car sometimes. 🙂
Amanda’s $2,000 wager doesn’t make sense at all, because she’s not gonna lock out Colby with that wager, and she also falls below him if Colby wagers nothing.
Andy controlled the game throughout the match. Very good going. Congratulations Andy.
Glad to see a triple solve in fj. Sedona, Arizona was the link. As Alex stated even if you knew nothing about baseball this was easy.
yes, that makes 2 triple solves this week, right?
I was surprised at the phrenology TS. Here’s some interesting stuff on it from the Skeptic’s Dictionary: Phrenology was highly praised by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Horace Mann, Thomas Edison, and Alfred Russell Wallace.
Yeah, OK, Sedona leads to Arizona. No matter. I never heard of Arizona Diamondbacks, or any other baseball leagues for that matter (or I should say I don’t pay attention to them).
LOL. I don’t know much about the teams of any sport myself, Cece. I watched the game with my daughter and my teenage granddaughter and they both got it.
Oh well, I got Pushkin and phrenology and they didn’t. heh heh. I think there were only like 5 triple stumpers in this whole game.
My favorite answers after the shock machine were all for one clue: aye aye / aye, nay / aye, yea
Ay yi yi !!!
LOL!
You’re right, very few triple stumpers. And another triple solve – not too shabby. You know what would be totally cool on tomorrow’s game to end the season? A tie break — oh yeah!
You’re right, it would be very cool! And very fitting. This season began with ties up the kazoo. LOL.
