Final Jeopardy: Word Origins (7-28-23)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (7/28/2023) in the category “Word Origins” was:

Theories on the origin of this, a style of journalism, include Cajun slang for unhinged jazz & Boston slang for a person on a bender

2x champ Lucas Partridge, a school counselor from Las Vegas, NV, has now won $42,200. In Game 3, his competitors are: Howard’s friend Sharon Bishop, a high school Spanish teacher from Pawtucket, RI; and Monika Chavez, a career education librarian from Alhambra, CA.

Note: As Season 39 ends, I want to thank everyone for their visits and comments to Fikkle Fame. When the season began, I wasn’t feeling very strong and just praying I could make it through to the ToC. Now here we are at the end of the season and I’m feeling hopeful that another season is in the cards for us. Just knowing that the recaps continue to be entertaining and informative is no small part in helping me keep going. Appreciatively, VJ.

Round 1 Categories: Talking About Women – Working Words – Breeds of Sheep – Messin’ With Texas – It Gets Old – Real Fast

Lucas found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Working Words” under the $600 on the 11th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $2,400, $1,000 more than Monika in second place. Lucas made it a true Daily Double and came up with “for hire.” That was WRONG.

Referring to writers & others who are self-employed & work job to job, it was first used of mercenary knights show

Lucas finished in the lead with $5,200. Sharon was second with $5,000 and Monika was last with $1,200. All clues were shown.

Round 2 Categories: On the Money – British Literature – National Anthems – If You Know What’s Good for You – Actors – “CC” Me

Sharon found the first Daily Double in “National Anthems” under the $1,600 with 8 clues left after it. She was in the lead with $13,400, $3,800 more than Lucas in second place. Sharon bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

This anthem was made official in a decree of July 14, 1795 show

Sharon got the last Daily Double in “British Literature” under the $1,600 clue with one clue left after it. She was in the lead with $19,000, $9,000 more than Lucas in second place. Sharon bet $2,000 and tried Shelley as time ran out, but that was WRONG.

In the 1850s she published the book-length love poem “Aurora Leigh” show

Sharon finished in the lead with $17,000. Lucas was second with $12,000 and Monika was last with $1,200. All clues were shown.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS GONZO?

Etymology Online’s entry for gonzo first mentioned Hunter S. Thompson and gonzo journalism. “Thompson in 1972 said he got it from editor Bill Cardosa and explained it as ‘some Boston word for weird, bizarre.'” Italian, Spanish and German possibilities are also considered and it is pointed out that Gonzo the Muppet made his debut in 1970 but not as Gonzo.

Thompson certainly popularized the word which, when applied to journalism, came to be defined as “a style of reporting where the author is part of the story rather than removed and unseen like traditional journalism.”

Monika thought it was gotcha. She bet and lost her whole $1,200.

Lucas got it right. He bet it all and doubled his score to $24,000.

Sharon went with mudslinging. That cost her $7,001 and left her $9,999. So Lucas Partridge became a 3-day champ on the last day of Season 39 with winnings totaling $66,200. We’ll have to wait till September to see Lucas continue his winning ways.

I am so glad that you’ve been feeling stronger as time has gone on, VJ, and that you find all of our wishes and encouraging words to be such a source of strength to you.
Love you and appreciate you so very much!! And many thanks to Nikki for all of the hard work that she has done on Fikkle Fame, especially the many fun quizzes that she has provided!!

@VJ, You definitely always make my day with this website. My household has always kept you in its thoughts as you so bravely tackled whatever came your way. Most of all, You’re blessed to have a daughter like Nikki. I enjoy her posts on Spoiler Talk. Her selected quizzes keep me on my toes. I enjoy the way she emulates her mom. She has the best role model.

  2. Howard says:

First of all, a shout-out to VJ, who provides us daily fodder for review and discussion. The site is a real blessing, especially when I miss the show. And even when I watch it, I get to vent about dumb errors (which is taboo on the Facebook Jeopardy! contestants page) and crow about the stumpers I knew.

My old acquaintance Sharon was right there tonight. She was so effusive both publicly and privately on FB, that I felt sure she was going to win, maybe even in a runaway. She had a rough start with some goofy answers (“football” for the moved holiday) and 50-yard dash being run in over 4 minutes by a woman.

I never read any of his writings, but in the middle of the FJ music, Hunter S Thompson came to me and led me to the answer. Sharon being from New England, I thought she’d know the Boston term for a someone on a bender.
(I sure didn’t). It cost her $24K and a summer of anticipation and likely nervousness. (I was on a show called “Split Second” in 1974. I won the last 2 taped games one night, then had to wait about 6 days till the next session. I was a nervous wreck that whole week and lost when they put the two sharpest people from the new contestant pool up against me.)

The stumpers/missed DD were tricky as usual, but I knew or guessed the writer of Aurora Leigh (DD); the “behold the man” translation; Maurice Richard’s nickname (he once scored 50 goals in 50 games); mule-breeding man; British city called Milton; and the countries that became independent in 1947/1971.

Having been a journalist long ago, I should have known the term for self-employed writers. No excuses for that one.

    • VJ says:

@Howard, I also thought Sharon would be familiar with Boston slang. It sounds like a ’60s kind of thing (Gon[e]zo). She did quite well otherwise.

As for the stumpers — I got a bunch of them but that ‘Mill-town’ ref went right over my head. 😂 I could not believe no one knew the date of Lincoln’s death.

As I mentioned earlier today, I knew FJ! because an author I worked for years ago was called a gonzo journalist.

      • Jason says:

I don’t know why, but I got the Mill-town clue. Maybe it’s just the displaced Mancoonian that I am not!

        • Howard says:

I had no clue, just guessed another city beginning with M. I was half-attentive at that moment and thought he pronounced it Milton and not Mill-town.

        • VJ says:

He did say Milton, Howard. That’s why it went over my head and why I put Mill-Town in quotes. I would have picked up on that.

  3. Trevor Panno says:

Sharon could have put the game away on that second daily double but Lucas would have prevented it on the next clue. I think Sharon will most likely be back for the next second chance tournament.

    • Howard says:

I hope one of the Jeopardy “archivists” who know a lot of arcane facts and stats will check on next year’s Second Chance Tournament and tell us all how many of them got to come back despite missing Final Jeopardy. Because I can’t imagine that anyone who could have won the game with a correct response would be invited back. Just my opinion, but I think the 2nd Chance should go to players who had high scores, got FJ correct, but lost by a small margin.

  4. Jason says:

First, VJ, I love LOVE lawv your site! I just wish I’d found it earlier than I did!!

Bummer on Howard’s friend. She started out a little rough, but seemed to find her groove.

I thought FJ was kinda straightforward. I mean, there could only be one of several responses.

I just thought of something – Sharon is from Pawtucket. That isn’t far from Boston. I’m not from there, so, I had to make a guess, but, I might surmise that she might have known that. Only Boston slang I know is a milkshake is a frappe, and a water fountain is a bubbler!

    Again, VJ, love it here!!

  5. Rick says:

I came up with ‘yellow’ journalism for FJ as the clues seemed to have been rather cryptic.

  6. Marilyn says:

Thanks for another season VJ. You are in my prayers.

  7. Kevin Cheng says:

So that means for the first time since June, we finally have our first 3 day champion. Congrats to Lucas for ending that long drought and ending the season on a high note. What a great season it has been. We’ll be seeing Lucas again in September when he goes for win #4. Have a great summer VJ.

  8. Sam in Seattle says:

VJ, rest assured your site is a magnificent tribute to Jeopardy! and your determination to provide interest in the show and a forum for discussion. I enjoy every day, especially your “extras” about Final Jeopardy where I often. if not always, learn something new. You are very much appreciated! Please be well and join us again in Season 40.
