Final Jeopardy: The Oscars (7-27-17)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (7/27/2017) in the category “The Oscars” was:
This Brit is the only actor to get Oscar nominations for playing 2 real-life U.S. Presidents, both for 1990s films.
5x champ Justin Vossler went $10,000 over the $100,000 mark yesterday. In Game 6, his challengers are: Shadi Peterman, from St. Louis, MO; and Ryan Kious, from Albuquerque, NM.
Round 1 Categories: State Flags – Pennants – The Jolly Roger – The “Star”s & “Stripe”s – Try Color – The Union, Jack
Ryan found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “The Jolly Roger” under the $800 clue, with only 3 clues left after it. He was in second place with $5,600, $800 less than Justin’s lead. He bet $1,600 and thought it was the Bill of Rights. That was WRONG.
Between signing the Declaration of Independence & the Constitution, Roger Sherman autographed this govt- organizing document in 1777. show
Justin finished in the lead with $6,400. Ryan was second with $4,000 and Shadi was last with $3,000.
Round 2 Categories: The Literary Dr. Phil Show – 14-letter Words – Botany – The Bridge & Tunnel Crowd – Rock & Roll Hall of Famers by Hit – Let’s All Go to the Library
Justin found the first Daily Double in “Botany” under the $1,200 clue on the 13th pick. He was in the lead with $9,200 at this point, $800 more than Ryan in second place. He bet $1,200 and thought it was ground ivy. That was WRONG.
Also known as the trailing arbutus, it’s said to have been named by the Pilgrims; its bloom was the first seen in the Spring of 1621. show
Shadi got the last Daily Double in “Bridge & Tunnel” under the $2,000 clue, the very last one. In third place with $7,800, she had $2,600 less than Ryan’s lead. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT, much to her surprise!
Named for its engineer, this tunnel from Manhattan to Jersey City opened in 1927. show
Ryan finished in the lead with $10,400. Justin was next with $10,000 and Shadi was right behind them with $9,800.
NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
Anthony Hopkins was nominated for Best Actor for his portrayal of the 37th U.S. President in “Nixon” (1995). He was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the 6th U.S. President in “Amistad” (1997). Wikipedia has a sortable list of all the actors who have played real U.S. Presidents. According to that list, Hopkins is the only English actor to portray John Quincy Adams so far, but he is not the only English actor to play Richard Nixon. Robert Wisden played Nixon in “Watchmen” (2009).
Shadi thought it was Daniel Day Lewis. She lost her $3,000 bet and finished with $6,800.
Justin had the same response. He lost his $4,000 bet, leaving him with $6,000.
Ryan made it unanimous. He lost $9,601 and landed in third place with $799.
That made Shadi the new Jeopardy! champ, much to her surprise once again.
That 15th Clue: THE UNION, JACK ($400) In November 1862 this bewhiskered man replaced General McClellan as head of union troops. Ryan added an S to the General’s name. Alex asked him if he did that and he said “I did.” That made it wrong but it was not offered to the other players.
A triple stumper from each round:
THE JOLLY ROGER ($1000) An English dance called the Sir Roger de Coverley evolved into a jolly dance for couples called this state’s reel
THE LITERARY DR. PHIL SHOW ($2000) It’s time to search your heart & try to forgive yourself right now for axing that pawnbroker & her half sister

This major league team’s colors are Sedona red, Sonoran sand and black. show

Sade Peterson missed the Frankenstein question (the monster was the correct answer) and shouldn’t have won.
VJ, lmao when Trebek asked Ryan if he added an “s” to Burnside and Ryan replied with an emphatic yes as if he felt that was correct. Then he was ruled incorrect. 🙂 🙂
Trebek is slick. Did you catch that when you watched the match?
That was extremely funny and ticklish.
yes, I put it up there under the image (that 15th clue). That was so peculiar that Trebek didn’t just rule him incorrect and give the others — 2 history teachers, for gawd’s sake! — a shot at it. Ryan must have thought he was about to get dinged because Trebek didn’t hear his “s”. Instead he gets dinged because they did hear it. LOL!!
VJ, it was hilarious imo the way Alex dinged Ryan. I did see your comment above but didn’t know if you found it as funny as we did in my household. I do agree it was not offered to the other two contestants but I think it was because Alex had hinted at the correct response.
@Jacob, honestly, I was confused by the whole thing because I didn’t hear him say the extra “S” at the end and I was surprised when he said he did!
Totally.
VJ, in the Library category, there was a clue about an Elizabethan patron. I had trouble hearing the response, was it Marlowe? Thanks!
Hey, Rhonda, no – it wasn’t Marlowe. I’ve got that clue on the extra clues list with a link to the history page on the library’s fine website 🙂
Thanks, VJ. I clicked on the link and it leads to Insect Dreams on Amazon.
idk how that happened, it works for me. Sometimes that happens to me — I hit the wrong link and I’m like whaaaaa?????
Anyway, try this one so you don’t have to go back.
VJ, sorry to repeat what Rhonda has already mentioned, but the “10 more clues from this match” is linking to “Insect Dreams: The Half Life of Gregor Samsa.”
🙂
Oh! Thanks, Cece! I totally misunderstood and thought the wrong link was on the clues post. I am putting the right link here and deleting the other one so nobody gets a cache problem with it.
LINK: 10 more clues from this match
So sorry I messed that up Rhonda. I put the right link in my response to Cece.
Thanks, VJ, you’re a real trooper. 🙂
Thanks so much for doing that, VJ. Cece, thanks so much for clearing up what I was trying to say.
Thank you too, Rhonda. It was a team effort. 🙂
Well like you said before, VJ, each time Justin makes bets like this, it increases his chance of defeat and that’s what happened today, but he had a good 5 game run. Let’s hope Shadi can make a comeback tomorrow before the six week break starts. Anthony Hopkins was also in a superhero movie like Transformers 5. That was one of my favorites, don’t you agree, VJ?
@Lou, yes, it was inevitable that Justin’s betting strategy would fail one day, although I was expecting it to happen when someone else knew FJ!
I’ve never seen Transformers 5 but Anthony Hopkins certainly has played quite a range of characters, including Quasimodo, St. Paul, Othello, even Zorro!
Any of you ever contested in Jeopardy??
If you mean, “appeared as a contestant on Jeopardy,” then the answer is yes; there are several former contestants who post on the site, either occasionally or regularly.
Wow Shadi, you looked so surprised, see you in November 6-17, 2017, Justin. See ya later.
Whoever wins tomorrow gets to relax for six weeks until season 34 begins on September 11th.
And I’m hoping that, with the exception of Monday, someone will get Final Jeopardy! right this week. This is a very hard week for Final Jeopardy!, so far.
I know.
