Today’s Final Jeopardy question (7/24/2024) in the category “U.S. Place Names” was:

This name of a natl. forest means “fool” & may be one Apache group’s name for another group; it’s also a problematic TV character

3x champ Neilesh Vinjamuri, a software engineer from Lionville, PA, has now won $53,099. In Game 4, he takes on these two players: Wendy Zaballos, a mechanical engineer from Seattle, WA; and Davey Morrison, an actor & screenwriter orig. from Provo, Utah.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS TONTO?

I looked up 1905 on Newspapers.com for some info on how they came up with the name Tonto for the reserve that was designated that year and found it was already the name of a creek. The article states that the reserve “is intended to protect the water shed of the Tonto creek, an important feeder of the great irrigation reservoir to be created near Phoenix.” The Tonto Creek is not the only site in the area bearing that name. Why a name with negative connotations would be chosen is beyond me; however, the Spanish meaning of “tonto” as “stupid” or “foolish” had been in print for at least a century.

As for the Lone Ranger’s “faithful Indian companion”, IMDB trivia says that Tonto’s name was changed to “Toro” in dubbed versions of “The Lone Ranger” that were distributed to Spanish-speaking countries.

Wendy had no response. She bet and lost her whole $5,800.

Davey got it right. His $2,700 bet brought him up $15,500.

Neilesh took a stab at it with redwood. He lost $10,201 and finished with $5,199. That made Davey Morrison the new Jeopardy! champ.

Hi-ho, Silver! I thought Davey’s FJ response was a desperate stab. That was one really tough clue. In one of my favorite Far Side cartoons, a long-retired Lone Ranger is sitting on his rocker, reading his Indian-English dictionary. He sees that “kemo sabe” means “horse’s rear end” & says “What the hey?”

Davey’s all-in DD wager was daring so early in the game. I was trying to mentally send him the artist’s name, and he just got it in. But disappointed Wendy didn’t know a 4-letter word for burden. The 4-letter urchin wasn’t too terribly tough. Somehow I came up with the Madonna tune. Can’t say I’ve ever heard it.

I thought Davey was the one most likely to have heard of that national forest since he was originally from Utah. On top of that, he’s an actor and screenwriter.

It wouldn’t be a bad idea for future Jeopardy! contestants to listen to some ’60s thru ’80s playlists.

I guess it would have been nice for Neilesh to go on a long run, but I can’t say I’m sorry he lost. I was getting seasick from the side-to-side swaying.

      • Jason says:

The swaying I did notice, but didn’t bother me, but, I getcha.

Howard, you prob heard the song nearly 40 years ago – “True blue baby I love you”.

I thought “Tonto”, but only fleeting, and ended up with no answer.

I am happy to see Davey win. However, after his DD, when he lost nearly the entire amount from ringing in repetitively on the colors category and not knowing it, made me worry. Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good!

        • VJ says:

@Jason, I was telling Davey to stop that blind buzzing in before he gave Neilesh a runaway!! 🤣🤣🤣

  2. Rick says:

Davey was too quick on the buzzer during Double Jeopardy, and soon lost the lead. Still, he managed to win the game because of his correct FJ response. For lack of a better alternative, I went with Yellowstone for FJ. Oh well!

    • Howard says:

Yes, he really started tanking after hitting the DD, and did well to stay within range and even regain the lead momentarily.

  3. Kevin Cheng says:

Only 2 games left of the season. Whoever wins tomorrow will be the champion in the Season 40 finale.
