Matt finished in the lead with $9,400. William was next with $4,200 and Catherine was in third place, at negative $400. All clues were shown.

10 clues later, Matt landed on the last Daily Double in “Word Origins” under the $1,600 clue. Just like before, he was in the lead with $11,800. William was in second place with $7,000. Matt bet a more cautious $1,200 and thought it was a dachshund. That was WRONG.

Matt finished in the lead with $16,600. William was next with $14,600 and Catherine was in third place with $400. All clues were shown.

WHAT IS “PAGLIACCI”?

“Pagliacci” is a verismo opera by Ruggero Leoncavallo that was based upon a real crime. Its 1892 premiere in Milan was conducted by Arturo Toscanini. It is the second and most widely performed of Leoncavallo’s nine operas.

    Matt was clearly the best player, but he missed enough clues to allow William to stay within range.

    Even this old opera know-nothing got the FJ in about 2 seconds.

    Some nasty stumpers again. I knew the Mr Deeds director; the roof sections (mine has 2 of them); and the Willie Stark DD, which I thought was very knowable. Based on Huey Long’s life.

    Well I am happy Matt dominated this game today! Congrats to him and Catherine getting final right. Let’s hope that Matt can end this season with a streak to start season 39!
