WHO IS RASPUTIN?

November 5, 1905 is the date of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia’s record of his first acquaintance with Grigori Rasputin. As is well known, Aleksei, the youngest child of Nicholas and Alexandra, suffered from hemophilia. A desperate Alexandra resorted to faith healers when her royal physicians failed to help her son. She believed in and relied heavily upon Rasputin’s abilities to aid Aleksei. Nicholas came to have reservations about the “man of God” but, even if he did not believe in Rasputin’s powers, as he put it: ““better one Rasputin than ten fits of hysterics a day.”

Last Dec. 29th, on the 100th anniversary of Rasputin’s death, Time put together a list of 5 Myths and Truths about him.

“Is it just my imagination or are our Finals becoming easier,” Alex inquired before revealing the results. Uh, no, it’s not just your imagination!

Martin bet $2,000. He finished with $5,200.

Darcy bet $8,801. That brought her up to $19,201.

Deborah bet $5,000. She won the match with $19,800. Her 2-day total is $56,600.

Congrats to Deborah on her second win, I knew she would pull this off and I love a triple solve by all three contestants. I wonder if the truths and myths of Rasputin is similar to the myths and truths of Bigfoot and the loch Ness monster, VJ?

    • VJ says:

Well, I guess there is a similarity in the sense that a lot of books and films were aimed at promoting the myths, swiftly followed by a lot of books and films dissecting and debunking them. lol

I kinda felt bad for Darcy. If she stayed in the Committees category, that last DD would have been hers, then the fact that she would have won if she doubled up… Oy!

Also I was real surprised that Martin didn’t get the Readers Digest clue off the waiting room hint, nevermind the slogan.

      • Lou says:

Yeah I was surprised that Darcy didn’t double up either, I thought she would have pulled off a victory in that clue. Also what was martin’s response on that slogan’s clue when alex said it was not right? I mean everyone here reads the reader’s digest and I know you do as well. I would have loved to see someone running the whole committee category just like Andrew did in the shakespeare category back in 2016. Also what other magazines are your favorites aside from time and life, vj?

        • VJ says:

Martin got the magazine slogan clue he rang in on right — it was Forbes. Maybe you’re thinking of his “wooer” response in “OO” sounds when Alex said it only fit one part of the clue.

There were a few magazines I subscribed to back in the day and I used to always buy the kids subscriptions to their favorites, but nobody reads ’em anymore. Everybody reads news and articles online. Still I credit the Readers Digest with building up my vocabulary way more than school. lol. My grandparents had stacks of them and I did It Pays to Increase Your Word Power in all of them. As I recall it, it took a while to catch up to their current issue.
