Established in 1903, this European event was originally touted in a newspaper printed on yellow paper.

2x champ Ellen Corrigan won $23,200 last week. In her 3rd game, she takes on these two players: Emily DeArdo, from Reynoldsburg, OH; and Hans Huizing, from Red Deer, AB, Canada.

Round 1 Categories: Science – Music from the 2000s – Double U, Double V or Double W – Fashion – Languages – Man-agrams

Hans found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Double U, V, W” under the $800 clue. Only one clue was left after it. He was in second place with $3,800, $1,600 less than Ellen’s lead. He bet $1,800 and he was RIGHT.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE TOUR DE FRANCE?

From History of Le Tour on (now defunct) myfoodhistorytravel blog: “The early readership of L’Auto was low; so, in 1903 the chief cycling journalist Geo Lefevre proposed a six day cycling road race of unprecedented distance. A race that L’Auto’s editor, Henri Desgrange dubbed a ‘Tour de France.’ L’Auto attracted riders through the unprecedented prize it offered, as well as a participation stipend to all riders who averaged 20 km/h on all stages of the race. L’Auto continued it’s self promotion during the race by giving the overall race leader a yellow jersey, a nod to the yellow paper that L’Auto was printed on. Maurice Garin ended up winning the inaugural race in 1903….”

Emily got it right. She didn’t bet anything and remained at $1,800.

Hans didn’t manage to get a response in. He lost his $8,937 bet and had $4,063 left.

Ellen also got it right. She didn’t bet anything but that worked out for her today and she won the match with $16,800. Her 3-day total is $40,000.

    Another Canadian player… interesting…

That is a very low 3-day total, but a win is a win. Hopefully Ellen (or whoever wins tomorrow) earns more than $20,000, though.

Still, the fact that Ellen bet nothing on the FJ is either very smart or very dumb, depending on how you view it. (I’m sure Eric will have something to say on this.)

Suspected that the one wrong answer would have nothing on it (because seriously, what other European sport could one guess), but since having no response is always a possible wrong answer, I never mention it.

Congrats on your 2/3 prediction today, Mathwiz. Spot on. (I thought all of them would get it and of course never anticipated a zero bet from Ellen).

I’ve got 12 clues from the game over here today

      • Mathwiz100 says:

        Thanks, VJ.
Being a lover of word games made the man-agrams category all the more enjoyable.

I think she was afraid of the category. Also, the fear of The Worst Thing In Jeopardy (going into FJ with the lead, knowing/giving the right response, and still losing) becomes not so bad once you have won a couple of games. No matter what, she will be able to say she won on Jeopardy!

For the life of me I couldn’t remember the name of it, so ridiculous. I wonder if Alex would have accepted, “What is the bicycle race that they have in France”?? I suppose not.

What? It appears the ladies wagered zero because they assumed they knew zilch about International Sports. On the other hand, Hans wagered what he did because who knows why. Keith is going to have fun with this wagering.

Is he still making videos? I have not seen anything new recently, unless Keith is on vacation or something.
