WHAT IS MACEDONIA?

From the time it became an independent country in 1991, the Republic of Macedonia’s name was a bone of contention with Greece. The Greeks argued that its use implied claims to the Greek province where Alexander the Great was born, among other things. When the new country sought to join the U.N., Greece objected. A compromise allowed Macedonia to join the U.N. under the provisional name “FYROM” (the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia). More problems cropped up when “FYROM” wanted to join NATO. The issue was finally resolved by the ratification of the Prespa Agreement in 2019 when Macedonia officially became The Republic of North Macedonia.
