Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT ARE PHOBOS & DEIMOS?

On August 12, 1877, Asaph Hall discovered the Martian moon Phobos one night after he almost gave up his search. Six nights later, he discovered Deimos. Hall gave these names to the moon because they were the sons of Ares, the Greek god of war. Aphrodite, goddess of love, was their mother. She was also the mother of Eros, god of love. More on the moons on NASA’s website.

There’s more on the mythological Phobos and Deimos in the 5/23/2018 Jeopardy! recap, another time they were the Final Jeopardy! answer.

Tehmeena went with Eros and Apollo. She bet and lost her whole $3,200.

Ben got it right. He bet $3,000 and finished with $13,000.

Steve thought it was Sagitarrius. That only cost him $1.00 and he won the game with $19,999. Steve’s 2-day total is $38,400. Wowee!! That was some surprise ending!

Two wrong bets in this game.

Steve should have bet more than 5000 in the Daily Double so it would be a runaway game for him if he answered correctly (and he did). He had 20,000 going into FJ.

Ben should have bet all of his money (10,000) so he could at least tie Steve if he gets it correctly and Steve bet nothing.

Ugh. As if these contestants never watched Jeopardy.

The way Mayim struggled with Clytemnestra and Brahmaputra, I’m really becoming more convinced that her prep is lacking. She did, differentially, do better with “Karakoram”, although I think she just sounded that one out phonetically.

I cosign everyone else about that horrid wager of $3k. There goes his chance of ever being J! champ. It was his to lose. Go big or go home – and he did the latter!

  3. Gary Larsen says:

Kim is right about the cringeworthy wager the teacher made, but the “lawyer” bet $5K to raise his score to $20K and left himself vulnerable to the guy with $10K…bet 1 more dollar for crying out loud and you have a runaway…he deserved to lose as well…

    • klm says:

I disagree. The lawyer had mere seconds to place his wager; in the limited time he did his best thinking because if he had gotten it wrong he would be $1 behind going into FJ. The teacher had plenty of time (and I believe they get a calculator too so they can do the math accurately), so he has no excuse for his meaningless wager. Sometimes you wonder how these people can claim to be huge fans of the show and not understand basic wagering strategy just by watching the show for years.

  4. Howard says:

What the? Ben makes that dynamite comeback in DJ, then wimps out on a $3K bet? I didn’t think anyone would get FJ (I sure didn’t) and was impressed with his correct response. That was his game to win after Steve’s daring bet on the last DD. No guts, no glory. I foresaw Ben wagering $10K and Steve either $0 or $1.

Most of the stumpers were brain-crushers to me. I did know “Can’t Help Myself” group; the “Pere” author; and the Jim Beam logo words.

  5. Karen says:

The “peroxide” answer that was wrong but “hydrogen peroxide” was correct should also have been given a “be more specific” as well…the outcome for Tehmeena could have been different.

    • VJ says:

We are talking about the same clue, Karen: ON THE LABEL ($1200) Of Crest 3D White Professional Ultra White Toothpaste, “4%” this bleaching compound

Only we didn’t specify the answers because it ended up being a triple stumper. (See the top of page 2)

    • Jeff says:

I agree. Hydrogen Peroxide is in fact a peroxide.

  6. Collin says:

Steve loses only a buck after his response in Final Jeopardy is wrong, and went to the 2nd-day champion.

  7. Louis says:

I would have loved to see the history teacher double up on his bet as well. Tahmeena was robbed of that clue on toothpaste. She should be in the second chance tournament.

  8. VJ says:

I very rarely deal with ‘what ifs’ but I will for this game. Tehmeena should have been given a “be more specific” on the Crest toothpaste clue because she gave Mayim half the answer.

Of course, only Tehmeena knows if she could have come up with the other half if she was prompted for being close. If she got it right, however, she would have been the one to get the last Daily Double and she would have had $6,400. I’m sure whoever got that last super easy Daily Double was going to be right, so Tehmeena would have had the potential to finish in second place. I know she didn’t get FJ! right but I’m pretty sure the final bets would have been a lot different.

    • max says:

Totally agree. Peroxide is not wrong; it’s just incomplete. And Steve betting $1 and still winning? Ugh.

  9. klm says:

The history teacher is rubbish at math. His bet was cringe-worthy. Man just double up and win!!! This will haunt him for the rest of his life.
