Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS MURPHY BROWN?

Candice Bergen portrayed investigative journalist and news anchor, Murphy Brown on CBS from 1988 to 1998. In 1991, the character became pregnant and chose to have her child out-of-wedlock as “just another lifestyle choice.” Then VP Dan Quayle deplored that choice as “mocking the importance of fathers,” igniting a firestorm. Time Magazine says: “Even despite the electoral gains by women in the Senate that got 1992 dubbed ‘the Year of the Woman,’ (Murphy) Brown may have been the most-talked-about female political figure of the year.”

10 years later, in 2002, it was widely reported that Bergen fundamentally agreed with Quayle: “I never have really said much about the whole episode, which was endless. But his speech was a perfectly intelligent speech about fathers not being dispensable and nobody agreed with that more than I did.” That quote is even on BrainyQuotes minus any mention of Quayle.

Kirsten got it right. She bet $2,800, bringing her up to $5,800.

Steven wrote down “Sarandon.” He bet and lost it all.

Sam thought it was “Rosanne Conner.” He lost his $12,801 bet and won the game with the $7,999 he had left. His 2-day total is $46,000.

I didn’t watch the show, but I read your fine synopsis. “Murphy Brown” was a cream puff IMO.
Why didn’t Steven bet $4001? That is normally what the person in 2nd place does when trailing the leader. He surely knew Sam had to miss it for him to win, and pretty much had to assume that Sam would have to wager $12801 to ensure himself of victory if both were correct. Also, Steven would have locked out Kirsten completely with a $4001 bet., regardless of which of them got FJ right or wrong. IMO Steven cost himself over $8K and a return visit.

Thanks, Howard. I’m glad you liked the recap. As for the bet, I don’t know. If it was me, I would have to base my bet on my knowledge of the category. I would be thinking, with my luck, this is going to be about some show I never saw. Since I wouldn’t be able to figure out what is considered the proper bet anyhow, I probably would have bet $6,800. Then, when I knew it, I would be mad. 😆

    Woo! Go Sam!

  3. Albert says:

Being 52 years old helps with a question like this. This question proves that you cannot teach young dogs old tricks (a twist on an old saying said by 88 year old Warren Buffett).

Also, it is amazing how a famous cultural icon of the 1990s like Murphy Brown is not known to the younger generation. It is eye opening that such a successful show like ‘Murphy Brown’ could not be successful today. Oh well.

  4. Lou says:

It’s too bad sam didn’t know Murphy Brown but he should have known Candice Bergen was in Full House if he ever watched it. Also VJ, I’m thinking that Steven was thinking of Susan Sarandon. Did you watch full house with the kids when they were younger? John stamos and the Olsen twins were great in that show along with Bob Saget

    • rhonda says:

Lou, Candice Bergen wasn’t in Full House, you might be thinking of Candace Cameron.

    • VJ says:

@Lou, Candice Bergen wasn’t in “Full House”. That was Candace Cameron. Anyhow, my kids did watch “Full House” though I didn’t much watch it with them. I just remember that the Olsen twins looked like little troll dolls and were always saying “You got it, dude!” lol

      • JP says:

I thought Candace Cameron did an excellent job of writing and directing Jerry Maguire.

      • JP says:

In the extra clues, the guy in the Rick Springfield song is “Jessie”, not “Jesse”. I only noticed and pointed it out because my name is Jesse, and a fair number of people misspell it as “Jessie”, which always perplexes me because the only time I’ve ever seen a male Jesse with their name spelled with an “i” is the title guy in the Rick Springfield song.

        • VJ says:

Thanks, JP. Honestly, I never ever noticed that. Carly Simon had a song named “Jesse” the previous year and I guess I just assumed it was spelled the same way. It says on wikipedia that he picked the name off a tee shirt with a football player’s name on it — Ron Jessie. So it was actually a last name spelling. Interesting!

  5. JP says:

The only things I know about “Murphy Brown”, it being before my time, are that it starred Candice Bergen, had a nontroversy with Dan Quayle, and for some reason it recently came back to TV due to the outpour of support from no one.

Regarding the triple stumper, I just read “Dead Souls” two weeks ago. It’s a shame Gogol did not finish a sequel because the complete first volume was very funny and enjoyable to read.

    • Richard Corliss says:

And Faith Ford was in there too. She was in “Hope & Faith” with Kelly Ripa.

  6. Richard Corliss says:

OH! Kirsten was so close to be the winner. I hate to say this, but she had trouble with that button today.

  7. Kevin Cheng says:

11 more games left until the Season Finale. Congrats to Sam, a 2 day champion with an even $46,000.
