WHAT IS THE GOLDEN FLEECE?

Theoi.com has a big collection of various stories concerning the “fabulous, flying, golden-fleeced ram.” In the Classic Literatures Quotes section, it says Poseidon (or Neptunus) took the beautiful Theophane to an island where he could have her to himself, but her many suitors followed them. Poseidon changed himself into a ram and Theophane into a ewe. Poseidon and Theophane became the parents of “the Golden-fleeced Ram (Aries Chrysomallus) which carried Phrixus to Colchis, and whose fleece, hung in the grove of Mars [Ares], Jason took away.”

Patti bet $9,000 and finished with $18,400.

Anita bet $8,001 and finished with $18,801.

Matthew bet $10,000 and won the game with $42,200. Matthew Marcus is the new Jeopardy! champ.

I thought “ewe” was relevant, but I still got it wrong.

There was something compelling about Anita being just gorgeous, and Matthew and his British accent. I, too, thought that Patti’s run would be short.

The 80-number casino game clue was a softball. My sharp son knew the British metal band
In May 1961, our 5th-grade class was jammed into another class’s room so we could watch the 15-minute flight of Freedom 7 on an institutional, small-screen, black and white TV. We did the same the next year for the US’s first orbital flight with the future Senator.

What I know about mythology could fit on the head of a pin, but I figured out FJ from “ewe.”

And “Yay” for Matthew from my current home of Portland, OR. Patti is a good player, but I didn’t envision a long run for her.
