Final Jeopardy: Businesses (7-1-16)

The Final Jeopardy question (7/1/2016) in the category “Businesses” was:

An 1860 ad for this business that only lasted 19 months sought “Ten or a dozen men, familiar with the management of horses”

New champ Shyamlee Patel won $20,401 yesterday. She’s going for a second win in the last match of the week and on the first day of the month. Her challengers are: Valerie Ryan, from Austin, TX; and Zach Klitzman, from Washington, DC.

Round 1 Categories: Movie Mistakes – Letter Perfect – Who Was President When I Died? – “Con”centration – Brand Names – The United States of Kentucky

Zach finished in the lead with $9,800. Shyamlee was second with $4,600 and Valerie was last at zero.

Round 2 Categories: Symphony Orchestras – Nonfiction – Recent Pop Culture – Words In Jeopardy – Daylight Saving Time – Nice Long Danes

Zach found the first Daily Double in “Nice Long Danes” under the $1,600 clue exactly halfway through the round. He was in the lead with $13,000 now but Shyamlee did some awesome catching up. She was in second place with only $800 less. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

In 1990, 6’2″ Dane Peter Martins succeeded Jerome Robbins as boss of this Big Apple artistic organization. show

Shyamlee found the last Daily Double in “Nonfiction” under the $1,600 clue. She was now in second place with $17,000, a mere $400 less than Zach’s lead. She bet $1,000 and she was RIGHT.

“Prague Winter” is this Secretary of State’s memoir of her life as a child in Czechoslovakia during WWII. show

Zach finished in the lead with $21,000. Shyamlee was next with $18,800 and Valerie was in third place with $4,800.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE PONY EXPRESS?

The particular ad that the clue is referring to was published on March 19, 1860 in the Sacramento Union: “”MEN WANTED! The undersigned wishes to hire ten or a dozen men, familiar with the management of horses, as hostlers, or riders on the Overland Express Route via Salt Lake City. Wages $50 per month and found. [sic] I may be found at the St. George Hotel during Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. ~ WILLIAM W. FINNEY”

In his book “Orphans Preferred: The Twisted Truth and Lasting Legend of The Pony Express,” Christopher Corbett examines the stories surrounding the Pony Express. He was unable to document the more famous advertisement that reads “Wanted. Young, skinny, wiry fellows not over 18. Must be expert riders, willing to risk death daily. Orphans preferred,” and also concluded that Buffalo Bill was not really a Pony Express rider.

Valerie bet $3,200 and finished with $8,000.

Shyamlee bet $12,201. That brought her up to $31,001.

Zach bet $16,601 so he became the new Jeopardy! champ with a whopping $37,601. “For one day!,” Alex exclaimed, “One half hour’s work.”

What was the question about the Danish king Christian X?. I understood that they asked what nationality the King had there said this during the occupation by Germany that he would also wear the yellow David Star if the Jews had to. please be advised that is an old myth since the Danish Jews were NOT asked to do this, and of course the King never said anything about this subject, try Google who has all about it!

I would have thought Shymalee had gone for her second win but oh well, its okay but she could have bet at least 13K to tie with Zach or something. So far June we only had one 6 time champion and the remaining three weeks just a few three time champion contestants. I hope zach scores big next week

    • Mathwiz100 says:

Today’s win had a higher winning score then every single game in June (one of Hunter’s win came close at 36k or so).

  3. Jasper says:

Once again, the people behind the leader do dumb things and cost themselves the win by not betting it all

    • EricS says:

Betting it all was not necessary, but you are onto something . The correct wager is more subtle. There is an explanation below.

Shouldn’t the Kentucky category have been called the Contiguous States of Kentucky??

  5. VJ says:

@Cece, speaking of Psalm 23, there is a beautiful French version set to music on youtube

  6. Mathwiz100 says:

Thought that Shyamlee would be leading going into FJ… oh well. $37,601, though… that’s impressive.
At this point, I would talk about the wrong FJs, but there were none. There weren’t even any Daily Doubles answered incorrectly.
By the way, I think you meant to say “Zach” instead of “Dane” on that paragraph under the Round 2 categories.

    • Mathwiz100 says:

Oh yes, so well done on correctly predicting Zach to win it, VJ… at least it was close 🙂

      • VJ says:

Yes, wow, it was real close. I thought Shyamlee could catch up when I saw the music category and the Recent Pop Culture, because she mentioned her singing in the chat and being younger than Zach and Valerie. I was so surprised when she only bet $1K on her DD. And the other one that surprised me was the Psalm 23 clue.

I’ve got 12 clues from this match over here now… and yes, I meant Zach 😀

    • EricS says:

She should have bet enough on the last DD to not only take the lead, but secure it.

      • VJ says:

Eric, I meant to put in that there were still 5 clues to go after Shyamlee landed on that DD. They were worth $4,800. As you know, I have no idea on the strategy, but she had already correctly answered the $2K clue in the category and that made me think she had confidence in the category

        • EricS says:

So a wager of 5201 (400+4800+1) would have done it. A miss would leave her with 11, 799. A runaway, assuming no misses from her, would be at 23, 598. The most Zack could achieve was 17, 400 + 4, 800 =22, 000. The key is to pack away the buzzer after the incorrect response.

        • EricS says:

Lol. Runaway at 23, 599* actually, but same theory.

      • Mathwiz100 says:

Also, if Shyamlee had answered incorrectly, there would have been the risk of a runaway.
