Final Jeopardy: European Artists (7-2-15)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (7/2/2015), in the category “European Artists” was:

In 1890 a critic said this artist “directs his brush with enormous dabs of impasto of very pure color in sinuous trails.”.

New champ Alex Irvine won $26,000 yesterday. His opponents in his second game are: Jon Lubin, originally from Stony Brook, NY; and Elsa Angrist, from Arlington, VA

Round 1: Alex found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Sole Men” under the $600 clue with only 2 clues left after it. He was in third place with $2,200, $2,000 less than Elsa’s lead. He bet $1,000 and he was RIGHT.

Jon finished in the lead with $4,600. Elsa was second with $4,200 and Alex was last with $3,200. After the break, Jon’s score was changed to $4,200 for leaving the “s” off his answer to this last clue ($200 in Sole Men): “A German army medic named Klaus was the “Doc” behind this boot brand.”

Round 2: Jon found the first Daily Double in “State Capital Nicknames” under the $1,200 clue. He was in second place with $6,600, $3,200 less than Elsa’s lead. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

Alex finished in the lead with $16,400. Elsa was next with $14,200 and Jon was in third place with $7,800.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS VINCENT VAN GOGH?

On its blog, VanGogh Gallery.com says: “Van Gogh used impasto not just to add dimension to his paintings but to add emotion and movement. We see this movement in the swirling clouds of Wheat Field with Cypresses and Starry Night. The same colors and images could have been created with a traditional painting technique but the movement and emotion of the painting would be missing.”

As for the quote in the clue, it is a translation from “Les Isolés: Vincent van Gogh” by Gabriel-Albert Aurier, a French writer, poet and art critic who died at the age of 27, just two years after Van Gogh died. A preview of “Van Gogh in Saint-Rémy and Auvers” (1986) by Ronald Pickvance on google books gives a different translation as well as the original French: “Sa brosse opère par énormes empâtement de tons tres purs, par trainées incurvées…”

Jon got it right. His $7,799 bet brought him up to $15,599.

Elsa thought it was Gauguin. She lost $10,000 and finished with $4,200.

Alex came up with Monet. That cost him $12,001 and he wound up with $4,399, and that made Jon Lubin the new Jeopardy! champ.

FJ Results: 7-2-15

During the chat, Jon shared how the Jeopardy! think music always brings back memories of his mother tapping out the tune on his back when, as a child, they often watched the game together.

For some reason I thought Elsa was gonna get FJ — I was surprised she didn’t.

Did Alex say “There aren’t many European artists” after he read the FJ clue or did I hear it wrong?

    • VJ says:

He said here’s one we use all the time so bet it all. LOL. just kidding.

He said “There are and have been many European artists. Let’s narrow it down with this clue, shall we?”

      • Cece says:

Lol, he might as well have said the first sentence you wrote. Very funny, VJ.

I couldn’t hear well, what with an invasion of seagulls in my neighborhood, right outside my place. Some idiot has been feeding them loads of bread, so they fly around making that terrible loud sound which makes crows seem quiet in comparison. Very annoying creatures, albeit beautiful. Like the Kardashians.

        Sorry about the rant. 🙂

Thanks for the blog. Our local news likes to break in on final. You’re a life saver.

This game was entertaining to watch. Every time Alex went to the “Literature of the early 1800’s” category Jon would snatch the first three clues from under him and Elsa got the last clue. So the only clue that Alex capitalized off of in this category was the Daily Double that he got.

This shows that what you think is your wheelhouse may not be at all. Remember Alex is a writer. :-[

Wasn’t surprised Jon got fj correct. He’s from NY and MoMA has a nice collection of Van Gogh’s art. This was a game of last became first. Congrats Jon on your win! Nice come from behind win.

My, my! That was pretty tense at the end of Round 2 to see who was going to finish in the lead, if (like me) you were thinking whoever finished in the lead was going to win.

@Rhonda, so someone picked Gauguin after all. LOL. This was the Game Over “quote” that made me chuckle. “Someone in town today called me Van Gauguin, and I’ve had enough!”

    • rhonda says:

Yes, 1 for Gauguin, VJ. Thanks for posting the “quote”, it’s cute and clever, too.
