2x champ Deirdre Thomas, an attorney & editor from Washington, has now won $33,200. In Game 3, she takes on these two players: Jessica Rea, a student from California; and Ali Hasan, a secondary school teacher from Canada.

Round 1 Categories: The Shape of Things – World History – Our Favorite Suff-ics – That Redundancy Is Redundant – Frank Sinatra – Chairman of the Board

Ali found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “World History” under the $800 clue on the 10th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $3,200, $2,400 more than Deirdre in second place. He made it a true Daily Double and Trebek jinxed him with “remember what happened yesterday to Sara.” He took a guess with the Magna Carta and that was WRONG.

After a long journey, this was signed Nov. 21, 1620 to ensure the enactment of “just & equal laws” show

Deirdre finished in the lead with $5,600. Ali was second with $1,800 and Jessica was last with $1,200.

Ali finished in the lead with $10,800. Jessica was next with $10,200 and Deirdre was in third place with $10,000.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS THOMAS DEWEY?

Just about everyone knows the story of how the Chicago Tribune published the headline “Dewey Defeats Truman” on November 3, 1948 before the final election results came in. When they did, It was Harry S. Truman who defeated Thomas E. Dewey. Here is the text of Dewey’s congratulatory telegram: “”‘My heartiest congratulations on your election and every good wish for a successful administration. I urge all Americans to unite behind you in support of every effort to keep our nation strong and free and to establish peace in the world.” Read more about it on UPI News.

Deirdre wrote down Truman. She lost everything but a dollar.

Jessica had Truman, too. She lost her $8,500 bet, leaving her with $1,700.

Ali got it right. He risked $9,601 so he won the match with $20,401. Ali Hasan is the new Jeopardy! champ.

    Thought that was the worst FJ ever. Everyone knew the story of the 1948 election, but couldn’t figure out what the answer was going for. The quote could have applied to either of them and the only reason to bring up the congratulatory telegram would have been if this was the one time when the winner mistakenly congratulated the loser. But it wasn’t!! It was like every other election that has ever occurred, so go figure.

    The Mayflower Compact was the subject of the final question in the November 1980 Joker’s Wild TofC, which won Rob Griffin $250K, paid at $25K a year for the next 10 years, and $250K donated to his favorite charity.

    Who’s gonna make a true daily double and get it right this time tomorrow?

    • John B. says:

      @Richard
      I’ll try to repeat my trifecta from today. My dry spell was long enough…..:):):)

        @John B.
        I hope the next Teen Tournament will be better than what happened 2 years ago.

  4. Louis says:

    Well congrats to Ali on getting this right but it’s a shame Deirdre didn’t know Thomas Dewey since the new York highway system was named in his honor. You heard that he was the first governor of New York right VJ? Was there a highway named in Truman’s honor though? I still think we need a streak in Ali.

    • John B. says:

      @Louis
      JJ and I agreed that some player(s) may misread the clue and pick the winner, Truman. And that’s exactly what happened, Ali won despite missing 2 DDs since he was the only one right in FJ. Judging from his name he might be not such a many generations American than the 2 ladies today, yet HE knew the right answer. SO, YES, congratulations to Ali for 1) know the right answer and 2) being able to read and UNDERSTAND a 2 line clue!

    • VJ says:

      @Lou, I heard that George Clinton was the first governor of New York (when it became a state) idk if there is a road named after Truman. I know he’s been on some postage stamps, and I know there’s an Eisenhower Parkway in New Jersey.

      Speaking of NJ, I thought it was pretty funny that they all took a shot at the town where Sinatra was born by just naming well-known NJ cities. They must have thought that it had to be a well-known city for it to be in a Jeopardy! clue, while the clue writers think that his birthplace is common knowledge. In any event if you don’t know, don’t guess!!

    CONGRATULATIONS to ALI!! My teacher did not let me down, (I even forgive him the 2 missed DDs, he must have turned it on in the end to finish in the lead) and we have yet a new champion. I wonder how long he will last…? AND 2 obviously DID misread the clue (why would Truman congratulate Dewey or Thurmond?)
    Jessica’s bet was ????? I would be grateful if somebody could explain that to me. Only thing I can come up with that Ali and Deirdre would be wrong.
    Anyway, Marty and Jeffrey, the 2 leading 3 game winners look better every time somebody does not get to 4 wins and the clock…Tick-Tock…

      @Louis
      One “possibility” why 2 contestants picked Truman may have been the predictions of polls and the media who all predicted Dewey to win. NBC up to the almost last minute. I doubt it though that this was their thinking. I guess they just misread the clue, probably just the usual “pressure FJ brain freeze” and only 30 seconds to think,decide and put it in writing.

    • Becci says:

      John B. I also read/understood it as Truman being the sender of said telegram. Here is the story & picture behind the mixup.

      MENTAL FLOSS

      • John B. says:

        @Becci, Yeah, I saw that too. In my post @ Louis I mentioned that all the media, pollsters etc predicted Dewey to win once all votes where in.
