Final Jeopardy: Music in America (6-18-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (6/18/2014), in the category “Music in America” was:

Established by Congress in 1798, it’s the oldest continuously active U.S. professional music ensemble.

New champ Paige Ormiston cleaned up yesterday to the tune of $32,200! Let’s see if she can rack up another big win against today’s new players: Desiree Zicko, from Reading, MA; and Troy Senik, from Westlake Village, CA.

Round 1: Desiree found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “The Greek God or Goddess of…” under the $800 clue. She was in second place with $1,800, $4,000 less than Troy’s lead. She bet $800 and didn’t even speak, so she was WRONG.

Round 2: Troy found the first Daily Double in “History, on the Move” under the $1,600 clue. He was in the lead with $14,600, $10,000 more than Paige in second place. He bet $3,000 and he was RIGHT.

Troy found the last Daily Double in “Pulitzer Prize-Winning Plays” under the $1,600 clue. In the lead with $25,200, he had a whopping $17,800 more than Paige in second place. Alex Trebek teased him about making it a true Daily Double, but Troy wasn’t feeling it. Based on his knowledge in the category, he chose to go with a $500 bet. That turned out good because he didn’t know so he was WRONG.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE U.S. MARINE BAND?

On July 11, 1798, “in the nation’s capital of Philadelphia, President John Adams signed an Act of Congress establishing the United States Marine Band. The original ’32 drummers and fifers’ were deployed on ships, sent to other Marine Corps posts, and some were retained in Philadelphia to provide music for the leaders of the government. ” (Marine Band History)

Desiree thought it was the U.S. Navy Band. She lost her $1,700 bet and finished with $100.

Paige wrote down “the President’s Own”, a title for the band credited to President Thomas Jefferson. That was acceptable so she added $5,000 to finish with $15,200.

Troy wrote down “the Marine Corps Band”, also acceptable. He bet $4,000 so he won the match with $28,700.

Nice going, Troy! It’s good to see contestants winning over $25K.

Anyone here keep their Coryat scores?

    • jacobska says:

I didn’t. Normally don’t until I see a winning trend like I did with Julia. J archive normally shows coryat scores a day or two after a game. Keep checking there.

I don’t. Matter of fact, I don’t really even pay that close attention in the first round. Lots of times you see a player with a big lead at the end of the first round get their butt kicked in the second round.

Loved the way Troy dominated this game. He will be on Jeopardy for some time I feel. He knows his strengths and weaknesses in specific categories and wagers accordingly. Does not take Alex’s bait to wager recklessly. It appears that the females playing today had no steam to play against him. Could not figure out Desiree nor did I care to try. Zero personality. Just a personal opinion.

Well, that will be good if Troy is on for a while. Already been called the jeopardy hottie on twitter. LOL. Wonder if he knows that after 5 wins, the likeability quotient goes downhill.

ya, Desiree — tough watch, seemed like she was posing half the time.

Greek god video coming soon. If you can’t think of Hermes, at least say Mercury. LOL!
